Akasha Mountain Retreat is a labour of love for its owners. Elana and Chris moved to an isolated mountain near Heidelberg, Western Cape in 2010 – something so many dream about but few achieve. We bought our first Cape home from Elana and Chris when we met them 18 years ago and it was a very happy home – something they have recreated at Akasha. The house is perched on green mountains with views which really are truly spectacular….really! The house is a Cape Maroc styled retreat and has plenty of love in the detail – the owners travelled to Marrakech for the doors and other beautiful objects. The house is off the grid – which we love – yet it has everything you need, big comfy beds, fireplaces for snuggling at night time, an old fashioned Dover wood-burning stove for baking and cooking plus a modern gas one. The river is only a short walk away (although we recommend taking the car as the walk back is quite steep).
The courtyard is our favourite spot with enough space for everyone with shade for the hot baking sun and a day bed to lounge and read and daydream. Also plenty space for yoga and to meditate. There is a real sense of tranquillity here and it is ideal for anyone wanting to really escape and get some quiet time. Time to paint, write that book, recover and take time out… a space to heal. Spend the sunny parts of the day on the day bed with a book or splashing about in the river and spend starry nights around the table – al fresco dining at its best. There is plenty to do here, walk or cycle along the mountainside road with views across the dam or take a short hike to an old stone circle where sugarbirds nest in proteas nearby and see all the incredible views stretching over to the ocean 40kms away or try to find the 7 horses freely roaming on the farm. Nature is abundant, there’s always something to find. Stilbaai is only a short drive away too should you feel like a day at the beach.

From the moment I walked down the steps towards the property I was planning my return. Akasha is situated in the most profoundly beautiful setting. Chris the owner welcomed us warmly despite him being under the weather with flu. He showed us around and made us feel right at home. The space is well thought out, luxurious and comfortable and the amazing views are well taken advantage of. The blissful quiet was very welcome too. Oh did I mention the authentic Thai massage I enjoyed next to a crackling fire in the temple? Enough said, I hope not too many people find out about this place...
We had a wonderful stay at Akasha - we simply couldn't get enough of those views and the house was so comfortable and simply gorgeous! Thank you Chris and Elana for making us feel so very welcome - we will be back!
