Life on the farm has never been such fun. This special simple cottage on this glorious, small and exclusive wine farm situated deep in the Swartland between Malmesbury and Wellington should not be overlooked. Enjoy the walks, fireplace and the location as the views are forever to the mountains beyond. The fields change colour all year round. It is a wholesome farm where rustic country charm abounds. It is where the Badenhorst wine is grown and matured.
Simply decorated in white and blues with luxury linens on the beds, underfloor heating which is great in winter. A small kitchen and bathroom with a rolltop bath. I loved it for its proximity to Cape Town and the fact that my children were in heaven! We picked vegetables out of a ‘to die for if you live in a city’ vegetable garden, we frolicked in a little muddy dam after chasing the farm chickens, we explored the fynbos reserve behind the cottage. Be prepared for lots of animals….horses, dogs and lots of bird life.
Plus we really, really want to stomp the grapes and a do proper wine tasting (without the little ones) and remember your bicycles…… it is perfect bike country and close to Riebeeck Kasteel and Wellington for lunch although we think you won’t want to leave the farm.
What we love!
This is a working wine farm with lots of animals in the mix – paradise for small kids and also for adults feeling jaded with city life.
There are lots of chickens, very much free-range, as are their delicious eggs. Between them and the ever growing flock of peacocks and wild guinea fowl you are guaranteed a natural wake up call!
The gardens around the cottage are open for you to explore and pick some veggies and herbs to add to your supper.
What you need to know:
The roads to and on the farm are dirt roads.
The places to swim are resevoirs, totally fine to swim in but with green water which may or may not contain frogs in any phase of their lifecycle.
There are several huge, friendly and very lazy dogs on the farm.
No pets allowed

"Soul restoring peace and quiet - the qualities that define the Kalmoesfontein cottage and our stay there this past weekend. The tranquility and peacefulness bled away a number of weeks of stress and strain, helped along by fresh vegetables left at the door by the 'green fingers' that keep the gardens bathed in such floral beauty. The fire place ready to be lit, the copious vases of fresh blooms, the spacious bathrooms, the warm woollen blankets to keep the first night's chill at bay and the weekend kicked off with some great wine from the area. The farm is close enough that Malmesbury and Riebeek Kasteel are a short drive away yet far enough from the road that you feel tucked away safely within the Paardeberg Hills. The Swartland warmth arrived on Saturday and Sunday but the house remained cool and a quick dip in the farm dam, observed with curious interest by the horses, kept things fresh. The dogs kept us company and our son made three great new friends, exploring the farm and gardens with them in tow. A braai under the trees, lazing on the plump cushions of the rustic timber outside couch, soaking up the vista towards the Paarl and Du Toitskloof mountains, fields covered in shades wheat green with splotches of yellow from the canola could only help one realize that this is where our city-stressed souls soak up natures balm. Our top five for Kalmoesfontein The View The Quiet The Gardens The Simplicity The Dogs """
