Handpicked for you...

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to escape to Stanford with our three gorgeous daughters for a real girls’ weekend away. We took off late on a Friday afternoon with the roof down and the wind in our hair and great music of my choice playing for a change! I drove at a leisurely pace and arrived just over 2 hours later in Stanford. We were all so excited to be trying out a new hideaway, and what a delight as we opened the front door.

This is a real vintage, shabby-chic cottage on the village green in the heart of Stanford. The attention to detail is remarkable, and the collections of old and new were a hit with the girls and me alike. Love is evident in every detail and every layer of paint and vintage fabrics, as well as the old paintings and frames. A lovely big Stephen Inggs’ work – a nod to the farmscapes that surround Stanford – occupies a prime spot in the kitchen, which has ample room for family meals and was the gathering point for our stay. Beyond that, the vine-covered veranda was absolute heaven and so tranquil. The garden was an escape on its own, with a unique traditional swimming pool reminiscent of Stanford’s historic Dutch beginnings.

What we love…

  • The cottage’s bohemian vintage charm and country comfort.
  • The bright and airy, light-flooded spaces.
  • The way life here slows down so that the weekend seems to stretch on forever.

What you need to know…

  • Head to the Saturday morning market to stock up on farm-fresh fare, or go to the market on the village green on the last Friday afternoon of each month.
  • If you don’t feel like cooking, Stanford is famous for its outstanding restaurants.
  • Stanford is a beautiful country dorp, so make time to explore the village and make sure you fit in wine-, beer- and cheese-tasting expeditions at the surrounding estates.
  • There is absolutely masses for outdoorsy types to do here: river cruises on the Klein River, mountain biking and hiking in nearby Salmonsdam Nature Reserve, shark-cage diving in neighbouring Gansbaai or just head out to one of the many beautiful beaches close by. And then there’s tree-hugging at Platbos (Africa’s southernmost indigenous forest) or horse riding on the beach or in the mountains…

House was really lovely and what we’d hoped for – old, original and comfortable. Furniture was tasteful and clearly lovingly collected over time. Beds and linen were excellent and kitchen well stocked. We loved being in the middle of town, close to all the best spots. Stanford is also a stunning little village. I hope they manage to keep the developers away forever!

We absolutely loved every minute and honestly, there was nothing we felt was missing! The beds are beautifully comfy, great linen, loved the large shower etc. My only sadness was that we couldn’t stay even longer!
