Handpicked for you...

You couldn’t get closer to the beach if you tried than at this hidden treasure up the West Coast. It’s the best kind of surprise at the end of the 90-minute drive from Cape Town to the little holiday town of Dwarskersbos, and just when you find yourself wondering where you’re headed, you arrive at the end of the road, the beach sand virtually there as you jump out the car. There’s a delicious sense of being far removed from it all once ensconced at Casa Blu’, a loftily proportioned, contemporary take on the charming fisherman cottages so beloved of the region. It has the typical whitewashed walls, shuttered windows and wide, shady stoep, but with lots of clever details and immaculate styling thrown in for a look that manages to be both sophisticated and perfectly relaxed.

One of the best things about the house is that you can enjoy the ocean views from just about every room, including while prepping meals in the lovely open-plan kitchen. But there’s no better spot for enjoying sundowners than on the upstairs terrace, dubbed the whale-watching terrace for good reason – and not only whales but also the breathtaking spectacle of Heaviside dolphins leaping through the surf. Mornings here start off with coffee taken down to the beach before heading back to the house for breakfast. Just 12km away is the fish market and a good butcher where you can stock up for the evening’s braai. After an exhausting day in the surf and sun, curl up under cool Egyptian cotton sheets and light, breathable throws, just the thing for muggy summer nights. All the bedrooms have been individually decorated with the same loving attention to detail found throughout this fabulous retreat.

I have to say there is really nothing we would change. Everything is well placed and there is nothing one needs more than what is in the house. We had a lovely stay and will definitely be back!

Wow! What a beautiful place...both the location and the house. We all loved everything about...the pool, so well equipped and tastefully decorated. Thank you for the nice touches of a bottle of champagne, milk in the fridge and coffee pods to start! Only complaint is that we stayed too short. Would love to go back...

What a gorgeous place, you created a little piece of heaven! We enjoyed everything so much: the warm welcome, crispy meruings, warm and sunny days, spectacular views and the woo-fire on the porch in the evenings. Last but not least the relaxed, stylish, inviting and warm home you created. Thank you for sharing it.

Activities

Although Casa Blu’ is “off the beaten track” there is an abundance of attractions and activities for those that want to explore. A few of the more popular activities and attractions are listed below. As an added resource a more extensive guide is provided in the house guide upon arrival.

Local Tourism Websites:
Velddrif Tourism: http://velddriftourism.co.za
West Coast Tourism: http://www.capewestcoast.org/tourism/

Spring Flowers:

  • One of the highlights of the area is the annual display of flowers that appear after the spring rains. This amazing phenomenon transforms the Sandveld into a carpet of flowers from the 90+ endemic flowering plants. The timing and length of this natural display is variable from year to year and dependent on the rains and region. The peak season is usually between mid August and end of September.
  • Apart from the display right outside Casa Blu’, a day trip to Aurora, Rocherpan, Jacobs Baai, Columbine Nature reserve and Postberg in the West coast national park are well worth it.
  • Downloadable Flower Route map and Guide - http://www.capewestcoast.org/Flower%20Route%20Map%202015%20FA.pdf

Regional Reserves and Bird Watching:

We are blessed on the West Coast with an abundance of reserves and parks for hiking and bird watching. Those nearby include:

  • Rocherpan Nature reserve
  • Berg River Estuary
  • West Coast National Park
  • West Coast Fossil Park
  • !Khwa ttu San nature reserve

Fishing:

  • The region is well known for both excellent surf and river fishing with multiple local charters available.
  • Fishing and harvesting permits are available from the post office in Velddrif.

Boating:

  • You may launch your own boat onto the Bergriver at the slipway in Port Owen, at Carinus Bridge or on Bokkoms Lane.
  • Rentals or charters are available through any of the multiple operators in Velddrif or Port Owen.
  • You can rent Kayaks at the port owen marina to paddle on the river or use the Casa Blu’ kayak to launch directly from the beach.

Mountain biking and 4x4 Trails:

  • There are a number of 4x4 trails in the region which also cater to mountain biking. An extensive list of the more popular routes is provided in the Guide.
  • Please note that driving on the beach is banned in South Africa and the beach is patrolled by SAN Parks.

Surfing, Kayaking and SUP:

  • Casa Blu’ is situated on St Helena Bay which is fairly shallow with a sandy sea bed, hence the relatively warm water that attracts the Whales (Southern Right and Humpback) and the rare Heaviside’s Dolphins.
  • Most days in summer the beach in front of the house is fine for kayaking, SUPs or long boarding and windsurfing. A single kayak is available for guest use at Casa Blu’. There is often a slight rip heading north as the tide comes in so be aware and take care.
  • For surfers there are a number of excellent surf breaks along the Columbine peninsula to the south but this area is most famous for the Left break at “the Point” in Elands bay (60km north).

Golf:
There are a number of excellent courses in the region ranging from the resort style courses in Langebaan to the local Berg River Golf Club in Velddrif.

Regional sights worth exploring:

  • If you do wish to explore further afield from the house there are a number of great towns, wineries and natural areas to explore in the region. A few of the most popular include:
