Handpicked for you...

Montagu, which lies along Route 62, is the gateway to Klein Karoo and one of our very favourite parts of the countryside, not least for the dramatic Langeberg Mountains that embrace it and the hot springs that are a delightful surprise in this semi-arid part of the Western Cape. Time seems to have stood still in this quaint village. Established in 1851, Montagu’s wide Long Street is lined with beautifully preserved heritage houses that stretch all the way down to the Kingna River. It is here that the lucky few can relinquish themselves to the languid pace of life at Klein Nektar, a supremely tranquil, deeply luxurious three-hectare organic farm estate that – unexpectedly – is tucked away behind an original Cape Dutch manor house in the heart of the village.
When we arrive, the air is heavy and golden in the afternoon sunshine. Klein Nektar Manor was built in 1860, and its thick, whitewashed walls provide a cool, serene retreat from the summer heat. This beautiful home has a delightful simplicity and authenticity that soothes every sense – a tangible peace is the essence of timeless Klein Nektar.
Tempted as we are to stake our claim right away to one of the gorgeous king-sized bedrooms – should we choose the luxurious Cape Room or the romantic Dutch Room? – we instead decide to plunge into the sparkling swimming pool and then while away the late afternoon on pool loungers beneath the oak trees. With its views over the estate’s vineyards and orchards to the rugged Langeberg Mountains, the poolside Vine Patio is the perfect place to unwind.
We eventually rouse ourselves to search out one of the village’s great restaurants for a delicious dinner, before strolling back to the romance and luxury of Klein Nektar Manor. We had chosen the luxurious Dutch Room – mainly attracted by the idea of an indulgent deep bath in the freestanding tub in the en-suite bathroom. (Ecoco’s Natural Therapy bathroom amenities were a real treat.) Both our room and the Cape room have king-sized beds covered in crisp 400-thread-count Egyptian cotton linen and a light down duvet. Each room has a seating area with a couch or chaise longue – a great place to relax with a book. Thoughtful extra touches include fresh flowers, a Nespresso coffee machine, milk frother and tea station, and a stocked mini bar. Ceiling fans add to the romance. (In winter, underfloor heating ensures your comfort.)
The homemade breakfast the next morning defied belief: expect a memorable feast of organic fare fresh from the farm served up in the atmospheric original wine cellar that is now the Breakfast Room. Klein Nektar has a 1-acre Chardonnay vineyard, a grove of 290 olive trees (don’t go home without stocking up on their home-cured olives and the very fragrant, slightly lemony olive oil), an orchard of 75 fruit trees and an organic veggie garden.

That night, after a brilliant day exploring Route 62’s wine route and evening cocktails in front of the sheltered outdoor fireplace, we made like lords and ladies of the manor in the billiard lounge, where the rare antique bar billiards table gave us hours of hilarity and fun.

Be warned: however long your stay at the truly delightful Klein Nektar, you will not be ready to return to fast-paced modern life!

What we love!
• The elegant simplicity of this authentic Cape Dutch manor house built in 1860.
• Having the place – and the sole-use swimming pool – all to ourselves.
• Strolling through the beautiful vineyards and orchards on this organic estate. Klein Nektar practises organic and integrated pest management farming solutions instead of using harmful chemicals.

Need to know…
• Guests enjoy exclusive use of the manor house, and it is an excellent choice for a honeymoon or romantic getaway or a special-occasion break.
• Klein Nektar Manor includes an astonishingly good farm-grown, homemade breakfast.
• Klein Nektar is a ‘town farm’ in the middle of Montagu, which means the village’s great restaurants are within immediate walking distance for lunch and dinner.
