Handpicked for you...

It’s rare to find a country retreat as unique and authentic as Penhill. A scenic 90-minute drive away from Cape Town, you’ll spot its towering twin palms long before the outcrop of white-washed buildings set on endless emerald lawns comes into view. It is nothing short of an oasis in the ruggedly beautiful Nuy Valley, so it’s easy to imagine this wonderful historical place as it was some 300 years ago when it was built as a refreshment station on the busy route to Stellenbosch, Swellendam and Graaff Reinet, pre-dating the N1.

Having been lovingly restored, Penhill has literally gone back to its roots, although, rather than a stop for the ox wagons of before, it’s now a private and very special place for groups of up to 24 people to relax and replenish body, mind and soul. And to have a whole lot of fun, too, as it’s perfectly suited for hosting fabulous parties, from formal affairs to outdoorsy bashes that make the most of the glorious natural surrounds.

There are dams and pools for splashing about in, a court for tennis as well as boules and croquet, not to mention trails for gentle walks, more strenuous hikes and runs, and mountainbiking. While there are dozens of lovely, picturesque spots where everyone can gather for meals, teas, sundowners and to be sociable in general, there’s also more than enough space on the 3 500 acre property with its well-tended garden to find quiet time alone with a book. Where better for a nap than propped up under a tree beside the dam?

Similarly, the layout of the various lodgings – Penhill West Grange, Penhill East Grange, Penhill Manor House, Penhill Fruit Barn and Penhill Pepper Tree (all of which can be booked separately or as an exclusive group) – also allows plenty of room to breathe, which is what sets it apart from so many other places.

The gorgeous Penhill Manor House oozes country charm and history. Built in 1840, it is an outstanding example of Cape Dutch architecture. Today, the fully renovated, air-conditioned Manor House accommodates eight people in four bedrooms, with three bathrooms. The living spaces include a comfortable sitting room, kitchen and dining room, and thoughtful little extras include excellent WiFi as well as DSTV and a sound system. When you are not making the most of the extensive activities on the farm – think mountainbike rides, hikes and walks, fishing or canoeing in the dam, getting competitive on the tennis court or with a game of croquet or boules – you can simply relax on a lounger beside your own swimming pool.

What we love…

  • getting active outdoors with the whole family: enjoy walking, mountainbiking, swimming, croquet, boules or tennis matches on Penhill’s tennis court (racquets and balls provided)
  • the spectacular Conradie Penhill Artisanal Wines (a collaboration with award-winning winemaker CP Conradie, the fifth-generation vintner on the farm next door)
  • sneaking off to the excellent Nuy on the Hill for breakfast or lunch, plus a dollop of wine tasting, when we are too lazy to cook
  • treating the whole family to a visit to Saggy Stone Mountain Pub and Restaurant (just 5km along the dirt road towards Robertson). This microbrewery and pub set among plum orchards is a winner – enjoy beer tastings while the kids run free, and help yourselves to ripe plums in season

Need to know…

  • You can book each of the five lodgings separately or all of them together for an exclusive group
  • With accommodation for up to 24 people, Penhill is an excellent choice for milestone celebrations and weddings, and even for small conferences
  • The outstanding industrial-strength kitchen attached to the wine ‘cellar’ is perfect for catering for special events or mini-conferences
  • Penhill is conveniently situated at the start of Route 62, the longest wine route in the world

Very rarely do you find a “hideaway” that simply is what you imagine it will be. The cottages and main house are luxurious, and over equipped for any requirements. The farm layout and gardens provide a peace and tranquillity, that cleanses the city grime. We booked the entire farm for 24 guests, and the sentiment was unanimous among all. We will certainly be back. Oh, and a pair of resident fish eagles.....

We had a marvellous time at Penhill and it was absolutely perfect! We had a wonderful walk on the Saturday and my son did a major bike ride. I loved reading the history of the property and delighted it is in the hands of its present owners and their horticulturalists. The gardens are beautiful. Bev and the staff were great. Please send them a big thank you. We very much hope we will be back although not such a large group!

We had the most amazing weekend end away and all the guests were blown away with the beauty, luxury, level of service and interiors. I enjoyed my second time even more than the first and we are definitely booking mid November again next year!

“We had the most amazing time at Penhill this past weekend. I was joined by 18 friends and everyone was so blown away by the farm and all it has to offer. ‘Unbelievable’, ‘Absolutely stunning’, ‘Astounding’, ‘Amazing’ were some of the words used, and many more compliments. Copious amounts of Pimm’s and wine were consumed, and we hiked, played tennis and took numerous swims in the beautiful dam. Romano and the staff were fabulous and Romano took lots of photographs. I will round some up through friends and send a couple through. Thank you for the opportunity to stay there – we will definitely book again! :)”

I chose Penhill Manor as the venue for an important event – a 50th birthday celebration weekend where at least half of the guests were flying in from the UK to be there. It had to be special and it had to be beautiful and preferably a part of the world that a well-travelled group would appreciate. And Penhill certainly delivered. Fabulous location from a natural beauty point of view, accompanied by really great accommodation. Practically it worked excellently as we took over all the cottages and had the run of the place – pretty good thing that we didn’t have neighbours on our “Night of the Famous Dead” Halloween party on Friday. More than that though, everyone had a great room, most en-suite, and the décor and understated elegance of the place as well as the history of some of the areas was appreciated by all. Because we were a large group I outsourced the catering of all meals with the help of Penhill and that also delivered. Nola and her team delivered high quality food for everything from light breakfast to formal sit down dinner. Romano and the team at Penhill also sorted out everything very smoothly – from taking delivery of and chilling the large quantity of wine brought in, to laying out the croquet pitch and fixing up the few more energetic amongst us with bikes. All in all, there is plenty to do at Penhill and some nice things to do nearby. Oh and the website photos don’t do it justice. Try it for yourself…..

This is just a quick thank you for all your help with recommending and booking and confirming our stay at Penhill Farm this weekend. The farm and the accommodation is so beautiful. I actually can’t think of anything that would have made it more perfect. What amazing generosity of the owners to make this space available, and how wonderful that you guys are here to facilitate it. I will definitely be in touch again as soon as we start thinking about our next holiday.

Penhill Manor was just as excellent as the booking procedure and service via Perfect Hideaways. The property itself managed to exceed our expectations by far - it is just the perfect place to relax, wind down and get away from it all! Klaas and his wife took the best care of us!

Thank you so much for the wonderful stay at Penhill this past weekend. We had such a lovely weekend and the kids had an absolute ball. We had 2 amazing hikes – one to Saggey Stone and the other one on Thursday when we arrived. It was just the most special weekend. My boys loved all the birds and we have come home with such amazing photographs and memories.

Thank you so much for the most amazing weekend we had at Penhill Farm. It is the most amazing house, the setting is just awesome and the staff brilliant. It was freezing cold - snow all around us, but with the fire going and the great tennis, we all had a marvellous time. I shall recommend Penhill to anyone that needs a break. Thanks again
