Handpicked for you...

In a place like Churchhaven summer days are spent in or on the edge of the Langebaan lagoon close to the house. You can pass the day here in absolute solitude if you’d like to, swimming in its warm waters, walking along its shore or just lying on the sand or the house’s stoep reading or staring into space. Throughout the year the lagoon is transformed as the seasons change: in late summer’s evenings, for instance, it gets what Lawrence Green in A Giant in Hiding describes as its ‘grey nun’ look when the light is ‘like milk’ and the ‘sky is shrouded and mysterious’ and the sun, as it drops, fire ‘low shafts of pale light dimmed into pastel shades by the sea mist hanging in the air.’Add to that the low fly-past of aquatic birds who’ve made the southern edges of the lagoon near Geelbek Farm their home, and you have a unique episode of West Coast life to contemplate. The wetlands are the most important in South Africa for waders and are home to around 5000 flamingos in the winter – and they’re also perfectly suited to bird watching.Come in August when the spring flowers are out. There’s also whale spotting from the Atlantic Ocean beaches just to the west, behind Churchhaven. Southern Right whales and Heaviside dolphins are regular visitors just when you thought you were fully occupied with star-gazing and picnicking, hiking, kayaking, cycling, swimming, sailing and windsurfing.
