Handpicked for you...

As a family we are always happiest when we are immersed in nature, especially when that incorporates a soft white sand beach and crystal-clear waters. The peninsula of San Sebastian Bay off Vilanculos, Mozambique, is the magical setting for an amazing adventure and desert island-hopping holiday.

At Perfect Hideaways we do have some absolute favourite destinations, and this one is right up there at the top of our list!  To get there it is a 45 minute boat ride from the town of Vilanculos, zooting across the water on a twin engine power boat. It is best to be well prepared. Ditch the heels, put on your shorts and tee-shirts and start your holiday.

Days pass slowly at Acushla Beach Lodge. We wake at first light and start our days with coffee overlooking the bay. I always seek out Jeremiah, our wonderful chef, usually found in the kitchen preparing the menus for the day.  We chat about what is fresh in that day for us to feast on.

Planning how to spend each day is the biggest challenge. Island hopping, beach combing for shells and snorkeling are always the kids top picks. It seems they never tire of seeing the abundant sea life and colourful fish which live beneath the ocean, along with turtles, dolphins and peculiar looking dugongs.

After a long day of beach picnics, treasure hunting and swimming with abandon in the clearest of crystal waters it’s time to head for base. The lodge is enormous and the spaces are plentiful. Choosing a place to rest is a challenge. Sun loungers are abundant and there’s hammocks hanging everywhere. Or should we sit around the sunken outside lounge area, gazing out at the azure sparkling water? Spoilt for choice!

We got into a wonderful rhythm and found ourselves stimulated and happy. With our bodies relaxed we found our balance. Acushla Beach Lodge is not for everyone. If you want bright lights and big city… this is not for you. It is a true escape from the everyday busy pace most of us live at. It is a piece of paradise in a magical setting which is as pure as one can wish for. We love it!

What we love!

  • Arriving at the beach lodge by boat
  • The many uninhabited islands within easy reach of the Lodge
  • Acushla is made for relaxing with many comfortable spots to read or doze
  • The setting is simply perfect, right on the powder-soft white beach
  • Two pools, one for the children and one for parents
  • The colour of the water is bluest of blue on a clear day
  • The abundant and delicious seafood
  • Having Jeremiah to cook for us
  • Never having to lift a finger…only have fun and make decisions on what to do next.
  • Taking a drive in the 4 x 4 and seeing the wildlife

What you need to know…

  • Food supplies are pre-ordered and delivered prior to arrival, with top-ups of fresh foods throughout your stay
  • A fully-catered option is also available
  • Certain foods are not plentiful and eating here is more challenging if you have very specific dietary needs.
  • The lodge is one of the older lodges and dated in parts.
  • Not ideal for toddlers with open pools and ocean
  • Vilanculos is a malarial area, the risk is lower at The Sanctuary because it’s on a peninsula, but still a risk
  • It has zero-night life. You must be happy to make your own entertainment
  • WiFi is available in the living area
  • There is a hotel next door which is a positive if you should wish to visit for a change of scene
