Nothing says ‘South Africa’ quite like the Karoo. The Klein Karoo is a little different, with a touch more green and gently rolling hills. It’s here that you’ll find a Gregory Mellor-designed holiday home that is the most perfect hideaway. The low-slung, wisteria-covered, Karoo slate home left us speechless (and that doesn’t happen often!).
Days pass slowly in the Karoo and we suggest you spend a day in the pool – enjoying a cocktail and the panoramic views of this most pristine part of the country – and a cooler day in front of a roaring fire. The kitchen is a passionate cook’s dream: a sunny Lacanche stove, a pizza oven and a solid French oak, James Mudge-designed kitchen island with a rough stone top are hard-working accessories, but also look appropriately rustic. “Copper pots hanging above the stove and wall-mounted shelves filled with Sarah Ord earthenware are a country kitchen epitomized.”
Looking out towards the mountains, a covered veranda with a fireplace has slate underfoot, latte (lath) roof overhead and generous arched windows, giving the landscape its due and providing almost all the decoration it needs. Another, uncovered, alfresco dining area with a 12-seater table is perched on a raised concrete platform and is “about as magical a setting as you could wish for. Each turn around every corner had us saying, ‘Wow!’ Gregory Mellor has done an absolutely amazing job.”
What we love!

Yes, we had a wonderful time and everyone was extremely impressed with the quality of the house and its facilities. The Lady looking after the house was fantastic, really helpful and hardworking.
“The house is gobsmackingly awesome, the best of the best! We had a fabulous four nights, and want to return in summer to make use of the glorious outside entertainment area and the magnificent pool. We had log fires going 24/7, and the appointments and bath products and luxury accommodation were unsurpassed!”
