Handpicked for you...

Duiker House, is the much loved home of two people, one an architect. They have lavished love and attention on it, finessing every detail with custom-made appurtances such as flat arched sash windows, wide architraves and indigenous woods. As a friend used to say, “There is nothing like staying in a loved home.”

It was built three years ago by this practical and creative duo with an acute sense of location. To make the most of the view, the double volume interior encompasses sitting, dining and kitchen areas on a second level which can be opened up like an envelope to give onto uninterrupted views of the sea that make you feel you are living on a yacht.
The owner wanted to avoid beach house clichés by using fugitive colours — dried mustard, tumbleweed, Old French Linen and off the spectrum blues flashed with striking art pieces. The kitchen with its glassed cupboards and acute planning would make even a reluctant cook want to have a go.
Years ago it was just a shack on the beach, a feeling the owners wanted to retain. The house is only a few metres from the shoreline, protected by sand dunes, rich in coastal fauna and flora, through which a small sandy path leads to the Atlantic Ocean. The owner, an obsessive surfer, says his real joy is an outdoor shower, “I come in freezing from surfing to a piping hot shower.” The wide Atlantic rules: sea views from every room, big hallway for wet dogs and swimming gear, an inner courtyard protected from the South Easter, portholes.

A few decades ago Kommetjie was a just-out-of town village and still retains a village atmosphere with markets, coffee shops and pubs, frequented by artists and writers…making it ideal for a gentle, holiday-mode meander.

What we love!

  • It’s right on the beach through the perfect garden gate!
  • The attention to detail – this is a beautifully layered home.
  • The gorgeous sheltered inner courtyard is the perfect spot to chill on breezy days.
  • The views – incredible views all the way across to Hout Bay.
  • The upstairs balcony for lounging and eating outdoors on balmy summer evenings.

Thanks for reminding me about the feedback. We loved our stay at Duiker House, it was really wonderful being so close to the sea. Ross was an excellent host, he waited for us to arrive late in the afternoon and showed us around the place. He very generously offered my kids the use of his wetsuit and surfboard and left us a lovely bottle or two of wine.; a lovely handover. The house is exceptionally well fitted out, particularly the kitchen which had all the possible utensils we might need to cook. The outside fireplace was an absolute delight, even though the weather was quite warm during the day. All in all, a lovely home to spend a week in.

With great sadness we returned home... that should say it all! What a beautiful experience for the three of us, being in that beautiful home and surroundings was magic for my ‘soul’. It was indeed the most exquisite experience. I will most certainly book again through ‘Perfect Hideaways’

We had our most wonderful and incredible time in your amazing home. The home was very comfortable and had a nice gorgeous view. Everything was just magnificent, the sea, the ever-changing skies, the moody mountain, just to mention a few. There have been few times in our lives, were we have felt very privileged and spending time in your house has been one of them. Thank you very much.

Kommetjie, Southern Peninsula

Kommetjie, Southern PeninsulaThe sleepy small town surfie vibe is a big part of Kommetjie’s attraction. It feels a million miles from the city, even though it’s just a 45 minute drive from Cape Town, one of the most scenic commutes ever along Chapman’s Peak Drive. Most of the residents are here to escape city living, to surf
