Handpicked for you...

The original quaint country village getaway, Greyton, just over two hours from Cape Town, has retained its charm despite its growth in popularity over the years. You’ll now find a host of wonderful eateries and of course the mountain trails surrounding the village are the perfect place to walk off those extra calories. The quaintness and quiet is what the owner of Greyton Hideaway  saw in the property he bought and the renovation really is an ode to chic country escapism – think beautifully re-honed sash windows that let in the views, comfy sofas for whiling away afternoons, the softest linen and feather pillows in bedrooms overlooking the lush garden plus a fully kitted out kitchen that wants for nothing.

Greyton Hideaway may have been built 177 years ago but its complete renovation has brought it absolutely in line with 21st century expectations, with well-styled bathrooms and for those boiling hot summer days and cold nights – air con in the bedrooms. There are three beautifully styled bedrooms, one with king size bed (en suite), one with a queen size bed (en suite) and one with twin beds – and there is also a family bathroom. The owners penchant for antiques is evident too – you’ll love the mix of perfectly polished pieces and restored junktique furniture finds and the splashes of colour, be they with a lick of paint or a wool rug underfoot are welcome added eye candy.

Greyton experiences hot sultry summers and crisp Cape winters and the house is perfectly geared for both – there is a wood burning stove in the living room and an open fireplace in the kitchen, so long lazy winter kitchen lunches and loafing around after are a given while the outside covered patio and pool means in summer you’re likely to enjoying alfresco lunches and afternoon G&T’s late into the night.

What we love!

  • That the house is situated along a dirt road at the far end of the village, away from the hubbub – it is a veritable oasis of calm
  • The peace and quiet and mountain views are extraordinary – and the fact that the village and its shops and restaurants is a 5 minute drive or 15 amble away makes it even better.
  • The attention to details for a comfortable stay – from the decadent Sorbet amenities to the well worn books and pretty knick-knacks, its clear this is a well thought out escape.
  • The local artwork – especially the magnificent portrait by local artist Werner Smith
  • The proximity to so many wonderful walks, hikes and mountain biking trails
  • That guests are encouraged to use the herbs growing in the herb garden

What you need to know…

  • The pool is not fenced so the house is better suited to older children who can swim
  • A cleaning service can be arranged with trusted staff
  • The house reuses all water in its grey water system so guests are asked to please use biodegradable products
  • The shower of the queen en suite has a rather narrow entry gap, so won’t work for the more portly guest
  • There is off street parking available for guests
