Handpicked for you...

Stonehaven Farm is nestled at the foot of the Babylon Toren Mountain range in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, a biodynamic escape offering cottages that are effortlessly luxurious, yet simply styled, drawing design inspiration from their natural surroundings. The small farm is a restful, healing space intended to reenergise and spur creativity.

A short distance from Hermanus and a prime spot along the Hemel-en-Aarde wine route, there’s no shortage of things to do should you wish to explore the area, from mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding, to whale watching and browsing the many art galleries Hermanus has to offer. Stonehaven is right beside the De Bos Dam, ideal for swimming and canoeing trips in the summer, while indoor fireplaces and outdoor Kolkol hot tubs ensure Stonehaven is the perfect retreat even in cooler seasons.

There are two other cottages on the farm, however with tall fynbos and indigenous vegetation ensuring a sense of seclusion and privacy. The cottage is equipped with Wi-Fi (though no television sets), bath towels and crisp white linen.

Set in the middle of Stonehaven’s garden amongst the sunflowers, herbs and aromatherapy field, Hemel Cottage is ideal for a family getaway. Reminiscent of a chic farmer’s cottage, it exudes style and home comforts. Downstairs is open-plan with a large, fully equipped kitchen that will inspire even the most latent of chefs, and a cosy lounge for post-meal relaxing around the fireplace. Hemel Cottage  sleeps six people comfortably – there are three bedrooms upstairs (one twin and two doubles), with the main bedroom featuring an en-suite and a shared bathroom for the other two bedrooms. A downstairs sleeper couch and bathroom will take care of any extra additions to the party. Sit on the deck and enjoy the scents of the aromatherapy garden on the breeze or take a dip in the Kolkol hot tub on cooler nights to make the most of your rejuvenating stay.

What we love!

  • The owners are keen cooks and so the kitchen is brilliantly kitted out, with the best equipment for cooking up a feast
  • The down-to-earth luxuries – from the scented amenities to the beautiful throws and linens
  • The unspoilt views over Bosdam are balm for the soul
  • Who wouldn’t love being greeted by a basket of just-harvested veggies on arrival? And did we mention the honey? It’s delicious!
  • That Stonehaven is both a cosy winter bolthole (think long baths in the KolKol hot tub under the stars) and a wonderful summer escape too
  • Swims in the dam are deliciously refreshing, especially in the hot summer months
  • Early mornings on the outside terrace have a quiet and spiritual quality (it’s not called the Hemel-en-Aarde (heaven and earth) Valley for nothing)
  • Walks and rides on the farm’s trails get you up close and personal with the unspoilt surrounds – we love the Protea walk where you’ll find various examples of this magnificent species in abundance
  • The sense of privacy enhances the aspect of this being such a thoughtful place for retreat and reflection

What you need to know…

  • The Hemel-en-Aarde valley is located approximately one-and-a-half-hours from Cape Town
  • There is internet albeit patchy for comms with the outside world
  • With prior notice, staff can be arranged to service the cottage and even to cook for guests
  • After the recent fires, there are strict fire protocols in place and for peace of mind, the owners have created significant fire breaks on and around the property
  • It’s a lumpy, bumpy road from the turnoff of the farm to the cottage and while you don’t need a 4×4, guests are encouraged to drive slowly and carefully to get there
  • You need a permit to mountain bike outside the property’s surrounds – this is easily available for purchase from the Hermanus Tourism office
