Handpicked for you...

There is always something magical about time spent in nature away from everything and everyone, immersed in the African bush with only with the sights and sounds of wild animals in the bushveld.

Lanikea is a bush lodge in the Mjejane Private Game Reserve on the border of the world-famous Kruger National Park. Positioned along the bank of the Crocodile River where the hippos wallow all day in your view and fish eagles call. The arrival of elephant, herds of zebra, elegant giraffe and lion make it so hard to leave the large shaded deck. Every moment there is something new to see, but spent hours watching elephant and their babies make their way down to the riverbed, with the matriarch guiding them down to bathe and drink. Here they follow well-used paths and cross the river in their search of more food to fill their bulging bellies.

The lodge itself is a soulful home, designed by Tessa Van Schalk. We love her use of timber and its easy living style. We spent our days on the large verandah lazing in hammocks and on the well-positioned couches that overlook the river. It was hot even though we visited in winter so the pool was a perfect respite to cool us down. Days were spent playing various board games and plenty of backgammon. We barely moved as so much happening on the river, which kept us spellbound for hours.

We started our days with early amazing game viewings on early morning game drives including watching a pride of lions stalk a herd of zebra. We sat silently waiting to see the outcome. We were delighted when the zebras outwitted the lions and fled! In the evenings, our ritual game drive ended always with sundowners to see the last rays of sun before it dipped over the horizon. There is something so fulfilling and joyful to have this life experience. I don’t think I will ever tire of it!

What we love!

  • The pure and simple design of the lodge with its open-plan kitchen overlooking the river bed (there is 11kms of river frontage in this reserve)
  • The large verandah with hammocks for very lazy days
  • That the reserve is private and only for guests staying at Mjejane Game Reserve

What you need to know …

  • The lodge is fully self-catering so it’s essential that you shop for food and wine in Nelspruit before you arrive as there is limited choice locally
  • It’s just under 1.5 hours’ drive to Mjejane from Nelspruit
  • If you’re travelling with children, you need to know that the bedrooms are not linked
  • The lodge has a 9-seater game vehicle. The ranger is booked for your stay but bring your binoculars.
  • You can visit Kruger via Malelane Gate (pack your Wild Cards) but Mjejane is fully incorporated into the Kruger (the third largest game reserve in the world) and so the game viewing experience in the private reserve itself is excellent too.
  • It’s the perfect stopover on your way to Mozambique and the drive to the border is easy from here.

Sleeps 8 and there is private pilot/guide accommodation.
