There are many special and luxurious bush lodges in South Africa, and then there’s Ivory Lodge. In Lion Sands Private Game Reserve, the lodge’s location at the confluence of the Sabie and Sand rivers is breathtaking; that it stands in the iconic Sabi Sand Game Reserve and greater Kruger National Park means that wildlife is abundant. So prolific in fact, the reserve is believed to be home to the greatest concentration and diversity of wildlife south of the equator. Not just the Big Five live here, but over 130 other mammal species and over 450 bird species. It’s just mindblowing.
Ivory Lodge has also been rated one of the ‘best hotels in the world’, which is no real surprise. It’s magnificent, modern, understated and completely different to any other classic safari lodge. There are just eight one-bedroomed, ultra-luxurious villas, and the two-bedroomed private Fish Eagle Villa which comes with a personal chef, guide and game viewing vehicle. Each villa has a lounge and the décor throughout is rich and minimal, drawing inspiration from indigenous birds through both colour and texture. Your private deck and heated plunge pool overlook the Sabie River, where elephant stroll past along with other wildlife following the river course. It’s peaceful, soulful and you can watch the passing show directly from the pool or while relaxing on the deck sofa. Always, you are directly connected to 10 000 hectares of surrounding African wilderness, which is awe-inspiring.
Head out on twice daily, game viewing safaris in comfort and with superbly knowledgeable guides. The chances of seeing all big five during your stay are high, but what is guaranteed is excellent wildlife sightings and unforgettable bush experiences while there. Guided bush walks are a fine way to enjoy the wilderness at ground level. Aside from prolific wildlife, there are other evocative offerings too. Learn about natural bush medicine and buy locally made crafts at the nearby Shangaan village, or do nothing at all and be pampered with body treatments at the spa.
An additional and enchanting option is sleeping out at Kingston treehouse, with views over the vast wilderness in every direction. Set high on a wooden deck against a rocky outcrop, Kingston is under cover, open air and lit by oil lamps at night. The king size bed is draped in netting and there’s a relaxation area and private shower – and there’s a bush view from everywhere. A picnic dinner is delivered and this space and as far as you can see around you is personally yours for the night. Just imagine. Now imagine being there in person.
