Handpicked for you...

Not a signpost in sight (well, not until you get right to the gate!), Molapo is a genuinely off-the-beaten track gem on the north-eastern boundary of the Waterberg Biosphere. Set in a lush oasis of trees, one of which is a young baobab, and close to a secluded valley with inviting tea-coloured rock pools and bushman paintings, this is a family friendly private sanctuary worth exploring.

There’s plenty to do here but don’t miss a gin tasting at dusk with views stretching as far as Botswana, refreshing dam swims, a spa treatment or a delicious brunch picnic on the river near the bushman paintings. Succulent sweet mango and yoghurt, beautifully wrapped egg rolls and Caesar salad never tasted so good!

Game drives take you over diverse territory but keep an eye out for elusive aardvark and endangered pangolin before returning to sit around the boma, ending the day with yet another delicious feast. Food here is an absolute highlight: with fresh veggies and herbs growing right outside the kitchen and a team who’re passionate about healthy fresh food paired with superb wine, Molapo stands out head and shoulders above some safari experiences where menus are always meat-heavy.

What we love!

  • That children are welcome here. Green lawns and beautiful indigenous gardens and trees surround each of the stone cottages, making it very child friendly. The pool is also fenced.
  • That the main house has two bedrooms close to each other, making it easy to accommodate young children who need to be near parents at night.
  • Molapo is very accommodating with bigger groups and special occasions: speak to us and we can make a plan!

What you need to know…

  • It takes just over four hours to get here, and the last stretch of road is quite remote (one of the many reasons we chose it). Vaalwater is your closest large town.
  • This is not a Big Five reserve but because of this activities with children are safe, which means there’s loads more to do to keep them busy…. fishing in the dam, bush walks and tracking, river trails.

We were two families with young children and really had the most amazing 3 nights. The chef prepared the most delicious meals and always ensured there was something for the kids. The actual lodge has been tastefully decorated and has every modern day amenity you could desire. I have to also mention the beautiful table settings for every meal, and the same scheme was not repeated once for any of our meals. Matt was at our disposal for game drives, hikes and fishing activities. And with the lodge completely enclosed and safe, the kids ran around and rode bikes like kids should. What a treat our 3 days were at Molapo were! We were completely spoilt, and came back to our daily reality refreshed and with lasting memories! ----JOANA
