Handpicked for you...

The first and only house they ever looked at when they started house hunting, Nicolò Pudel and Tammy Tinker’s charming De Waterkant home in a cul-de-sac is a subtly but slickly executed renovation of an older home. The best possible marriage of original details and open-plan modern living, it’s the perfect complement for their social lifestyle. Consummate entertainers, they use the multi-levelled and multipurpose outdoor spaces frequently to host friends and family. A secluded plunge pool and deck, firepit with charming tiled floor and vegetable garden, and a wisteria-covered verandah and braai space leading out from the living room offer everything one could need, or want, on a manageable scale – especially when you’re wanting to be out and about exploring Cape Town but come back to an oasis in the city.

The owner’s love of travel and exploration has resulted in a décor scheme that tells a story rather than following a set style. Books, art and keepsakes that have been collected over time are a tapestry of the couple’s time together, with the only rule that pieces for the home are chosen together.

Cleverly modified over time so that it has all the graciousness it was built with, as well as the convenience you’d want to live with, it’s the best of both worlds. It’s compact but feels spacious courtesy of an open-plan central living area – a transformation that really made all the difference, and the beautiful light-filled rooms, with a contemporary-meets-colonial feel and a dreamy verandah also gives it a year-round holiday feeling.

What we love:
• The secluded but central location in the charming and historic suburb of De Waterkant is close to cafes, the V&A Waterfront and the city centre. Walking distance to coffee shops and restaurants and a short drive to the best of the city’s beaches, it’s ideally situated for a an easy holiday.
• The contemporary open-plan kitchen is kitted out for foodies and so if you enjoy cooking, the kitchen and outdoor spaces offer the ideal entertaining alfresco setup.

Need to know:
• There is parking in a garage beneath the terrace (a rarity in this part of the city and a life saver in the busy summer months).
• While Cape Town shines in summer, this house is also offers a perfectly cosy winter stay with comfortable indoor living and a central fireplace that keeps all living spaces warm.
