Occupying space like a sturdy, young lady amidst an old crowd, Blue Anchor harnesses her heels upon the east cliffs of Hermanus. Free-standing and set on three levels, this magnificent old soul, with new bones, opens her recently renovated walls out onto an eternity deck, and into the ocean.
What was once a 1950’s family cottage, previously owned and occupied by the existing owner’s grandmother, aptly named, Blue Anchor, defiantly anchors its history and succumbs, with subtle consent, to change. It has to. Having spent her childhood holidays on the property, the owner, a Landscape Architect, envisaged every nook, every cranny, every prospect of light, every party and every intimate conversation, and rebuilt this home with absolute appreciation for the years she shared with her granny.
The doors are the original doors, the window frames, the wooden flooring – some from before, some from Belgium. Tiles that have been sourced from India or collected over the years, all chipped up and merged together, contributing to the tales being told throughout the home. Antique furniture still sits beneath the consciously curated pieces on the walls, from a framed cloth of the Ghanaian flag, to three elephants walking beneath the moon, by the reputable South African artist, Karen Bezuidenhout, as recognition to the owner, of her children.
The eclectic combination of steel, wood, concrete and stone connect the interiors as you travel away from the lavish open-plan living space, upstairs to three spacious bedrooms. All delivering endless views of the ocean and the mountains, where whale-watching can be done from the bathtub, and spectacular sunrises kindle your morning shower.
Sun-traps and shady siesta spots are dotted about the place from the upper deck to the middle deck, to the lower deck, to the courtyard and back. An enclosed verandah, perfect for lazy afternoon lounging on the Kenyan daybed, extends itself into the space where the Garden-Designer-Owner, has clearly worked her magic. Luscious lawn meets the pool, that banks the white hibiscus and the pale yellow cannas, that look up to the star jasmine creeping the walls that cocoon the courtyard, and additional guest bedrooms.
When it’s cold and we need to move inside, the Morso wood-burning stoves keep the games going, the conversation flowing and the holiday clocks from ticking. Whether it be a round of darts in the downstairs cellar, a shot at table tennis, an impressive library of books to choose from, playlists to be played on the Sonos surround sound system, or planting yourself on the long, long sofa to simply watch the family fun unfold – it’s up to you to take your pick.
This, after all, is Blue Anchor’s intention; for you to return to that little place of nostalgia within yourself that feels incredibly new and exciting.

Just a quick note to say many thanks for the stay at Blue Anchor over the weekend. We had a wonderful stay and the house and location are unbeatable - truly a special spot. … the house was fantastic and the house assistant, Loya, went out of his way to assist and make our stay enjoyable.
We shall return again and again. Blue Anchor house offers stunning views, easy access to town/ocean, a well-stocked kitchen, a very safe feel, and the BEST house helper. This house is also very. clean. We stayed in winter, so we enjoyed the fire and warmth of the house at night, which is important to note because I was scared of being cold and damp on the water. The braai and pool area are perfectly functional for larger groups and the extra areas (downstairs, game room, deck) offer space for everyone to enjoy. Most importantly the couple who live on the property are spectacular and make this feel like a vacation.
Please convey our thanks to owners for their hospitality in sharing their beautiful private home. The housekeeper Loya was a ray of sunshine and his renowned fillet delicious! We had a very happy and memorable 80th birthday celebration weekend for my mother.
The house is fantastic and very functional and Loya is a brilliant house keeper - he was very helpful all the time.
We had a glorious time at Blue Anchor....what truly exceptional space to be in! The position of the house is just perfect, being so close to the water and lovely cool breezes. Loya was super attentive and we were lucky enough to have his fillet for our Sunday lunch... delish !! Nothing was too much trouble. It turns out that the family that stayed with us at the house were cousins of Claire’s which made it extra special and there was lots of reminiscing going on. As always, Perfect Hideaways, as we have experienced a couple of times makes for super special holidays
Blue Anchor is like a dream come true. You couldn't ask for a more magical setting overlooking the ocean. The accommodation is superb as is the friendly service of Lawyer, the butler, who attended to our every need. We're going to miss falling asleep to the crashing waves and waking up that incredible view every morning. It truly is a little piece of heaven.
This is an incredible holiday home. Location on the Cliff pathway with the ocean coming into the house. Perfectly designed house that took wind and weather into consideration and wonderful hospitality with Lawyer who spoiled us. 10/10
