Handpicked for you...

The words quick and romantic should never really be placed side-by-side in a sentence, unless when referring to a spontaneous getaway with your love. All too often, that quick, romantic getaway is talked about a lot more than it is ever practiced. We yearn for those hours spent together, away from the clocks, the noise and the monotony of routine. And when opportunity finally shows up, it’s the notion of it all that gets the pulse racing. Visualising the journey and the way-back-when soundtracks.  Dreamy depictions of long conversations, slow-burning fires, decadent meals being dished-up, games being played and deep, hot baths being shared. The chosen destination will likely go by the words of just you, me and sea.

Less than an hour from Cape Town, heading north, through the rugged terrain of the west coast, sits the quaint little town of Yzerfontein. Perched on the shoreline, amongst the rough fynbos scrub, The Olive Tree Villa opens its heart into four idyllic apartments. Designed by architect Gavin Maddock and laboured by love, this monolithic state-of-the-art structure, bold as it appears, softens and soothes the soul as soon as you enter. Old olive and wild camphor trees cushion the individual, luxury suites, simultaneously separating them from each other, into perfect, private hideaways. Spectacular views of the ocean and its long, wild beach with crashing waves pull you in and plonk you down on the inviting, cushy couch. Every detail, from the facade to its refined interiors, has been carefully considered and finely executed, delivering sensual style at its best. Floor to ceiling timber cabinets join the double-glazed glass windows that open up to the sky, onto the branches of the trees and out to sea. The robust cemcrete floors and walls are softened by the rich, sumptuous textures of the furnishings. Slabs of marble and porcelain counter the kitchen and bathroom tops, seamlessly unifying the space with finesse. Coppers, taupes, mustards, rich greens, light greys and pearls are all flanked by timber and concrete.

With its minimalist objectives, the space makes an impression and then leaves you to get on with your romantic stay.

Just like the lovely owners of The Olive Tree Villa intended. They have taken their experiences, memories and stories from living abroad, and poured them into the foundations of this Yzerfontein hideaway. Light all of the fires. Run the hot bath and throw in the relaxing salts. Grab the binoculars and drift out to sea, where the whales, the dolphins and the seals are frolicking about. Let the dinner simmer in the large Le Creuset pot, and allow the wine to breathe. There’s no need for urgency as it’s the start of that long-anticipated, slow-living, romantic getaway. Tomorrow brings plenty of sunshine, so you’ll be up watching the ostriches prance along the dunes from the spacious patio. Then dip into the plunge pool, wade about and let those chats wander. Later on, you’ll take a long, loving walk on the beach, as the evening sun sets the sea ablaze. Back to relight the fires, open the wine, and put on some Louis Armstrong. Because you can. It’s just the two of you, and the sea.

What we love!

  •  The serenity of the space. Every area offers complete calm – from the living room, to the patio, to the bedroom.
  • Sinking into a slumber in the massive bed with its heavenly linens and views of the sea and the stars.
  • In appreciation of the build, the suspended off-shutter concrete wall, that appears – from the outside – to float above the brick base of the building.
  •  The sensual soaps and bath salts on tap and in quirky wooden bowls, for lathering and loading into the bathtub for long soaking.
  • The lovely Bernadise is always present on the property, to help you with absolutely anything you’ll need during your stay.

What you need to know…

  • Yzerfontein is a small town with only a few cafés and one convenience store. It’s best to stock up on all of the fine ingredients you’ll need, before arriving.
  • While the apartments are vast and spacious, they are intended for two people sharing, only.
  • There is copious amounts of firewood available for burning.
  • This is a child-free and pet-free property.
  • Smoking of cigars and cigarettes is strictly prohibited on the entire premises.
