Handpicked for you...

Hailing from a sleepy English village I have always found Greyton makes me rather nostalgic. It is chocolate box pretty with its thatched roofed cottages, English country-style gardens and, of course, this being South Africa, the ever present mountains. Pulling up outside The White Oak I anticipated finding a version of country-cottage, possibly antique-laden shabby-chic awaited me inside. So it was quite a surprise and delight to find instead a very bright, cool, clean-lined space. Glossy white tiles and beautifully finished wood juxtaposed with humorous Lichtenstein-esque art, ingenious storage solutions and sufficiently softened to take it from industrial to comfortable and homely.

I’m a natural light freak and The White Oak more than ticked that box – the open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area has six double glass-panelled doors making the space light flooded when closed and allowing for easy flow onto the outside areas when all are opened up.  The garden, classic Greyton English country garden, softens this home further and with a pool, swing and trampoline keeps the kids happy. There is an place to comfortably lounge whilst keeping an eye on the kids splashy fun and an outdoor dining space with the obligatory braai and lights strung from the trees to add a touch of magic!

The main house offers three good-sized bedrooms plus a spacious guest suite at the bottom of the garden where the design elements all pull through. Usually when reviewing a new home I leave with a list as long as my arm of changes and tweaks needed to make it a true perfect hideaway. These owners however had pretty much thought of everything. It is an incredibly easy, comfortable space to live in and everything we needed was right to hand.

One of the delights of a break in Greyton is that you’ll find everything just a slow amble away. A visit to the internationally famous Von Geusau chocolate shop is a must, as is a leisurely sojourn at the The Old Potters for craft beer – I highly recommend their Plaas Japie.  And if you’ve come with little people a trip to EARS Donkey Sanctuary will enchant. For a family time away, The White Oak in Greyton is an absolute winner!
