Life is a beach! Mozambique holidays are the best and this one is my favourite. The soft, warm white sand and warm waters make it easy to do as little as possible. Take the family and the extended family along to play, eat and read. Days spent out on the water on the dhow with a picnic to one of the nearby islands- such as Margaruque, diving for pansy shells and snorkelling with the fish. Sip on a cold Manica (a local beer) on the deck to watch the sun set and light the fire early for a fresh fish or prawn BBQ from the local markets- take Johnny along, he is an excellent guide and negotiator. Fling open the windows for a natural breeze on balmy afternoons and spend the day in a hammock or on a lounger by the pool.

Situated 6km north of the coastal town of Vilanculos, it is hailed one of the best holiday destinations in East Africa with one of the best snorkelling, scuba diving and big game fishing destinations in the world- thanks to the Archipelago. Vilanculos has its own airport and operate direct flights to South Africa on a daily basis. If you happen to drive from South Africa to Vilanculos, you don’t need a 4×4 to get there as it is accessible by all vehicles. Vilanculos town are filled with friendly locals and a lively atmosphere, the town offers the perfect base from which to explore the picturesque Bazaruto Archipelago and the Bazaruto National Park. The marine reserve comprises of five pristine islands; Santa Carolina (Paradise Island), Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque and Bangue. It is so fantastic to work with the owners of Villa Ponta, they have two properties in the portfolio, both of the same unique style with lots of charm and artistic flair. The owner is an artist.

Villa Ponta is only a short drive from Vilanculos airport

This was our second trip to Villa Ponta – so that says a lot and I’m sure it will not be our last, I have recommended it to many friends and family. The staff Johnnie and Veronica make this a real holiday – they are truly unbelievable, nothing is too much for them, they are happy, committed, grateful and humble. True hosts. Mel is also brilliant from answering questions in LONG emails before we left to organizing a Chef and sorting out all our grocery deliveries we could not have done it without Mel. Self-catering for 10 days in a foreign venue has its challenges but Mel will help you with this, so don’t let it put you off. I highly recommend hiring a Chef and the next time we go we will rely more on local food, we ordered in through CaterKing but the quality, affordability and availability of seafood meant we really didn’t need all the meat we had ordered. I would also recommend using the boat Tabasco and a skipper from Big Blue, our skipper Cremaldo was another great find, he was knowledgeable, reliable, skillful and lots of fun. We went out to a different island every day for 9 days in a row! The islands are so spectacular you just have to spend the days swimming, snorkelling, fishing, walking and sun tanning. The snorkelling was all excellent but on one particularly clear day the Fishbowl at 2 Mile Reef was so perfect it was like being in an aquarium. At the end of the day there was no better place to be than on the deck of Villa Ponta – Praise our chef cooked spring rolls, prawn rissoles and samoosas which were washed down with a cold beer or a gin cocktail. Paradise!

We had a wonderful trip thanks to the info provided by the owner before we left and then the superb support and service of Veronica and Johnny. Both could not have been more helpful and truly made our stay special and memorable. More than helpful, both are extremely thoughtful and took the initiative to help us with our plans, plus anticipated possible problems that might arise (e.g. our trip to buy fabric in the local market - Jeannie is a designer) so we could avoid them. They are absolute gems and the owner of Villa Ponta is blessed to have the level of support and oversight of his home.

We had extremely high expectations of Villa Ponta as we have been to a few Perfect Hideaway properties and they are always of such a high standard - Villa Ponta did not disappoint. It wasn’t your typical “white washed” beach house but something altogether better, the owners have cleverly mixed in African arts, crafts and furniture without overdoing it and ensuring that they are absolutely beautiful, individual pieces. The house is beautifully laid out with a gorgeous, huge patio which has incredible views out to the islands. The lovely furniture continues outside and we spent our evenings very comfortable playing cards and scrabble outside. The common areas have enormous sliding doors out onto the patio which enhances the indoor/outdoor feel of the property. All of the bedroom and bathroom have their own individual style and exude quality and a sense of luxury. The open plan kitchen is extremely well equipped, we found everything we could possibly have needed and more, including the most enormous safe. The garden area is absolutely magical. I loved the area leading up to the front door which is beautifully laid out and became my “chill out” area when I needed 5 minutes to myself, having said this the garden is full of dozens of these kinds of areas so there are plenty to choose from. Whilst the house is absolutely gorgeous, what made our time there so special was definitely the presence of Johnny and Veronica. I really can’t rave about them enough! They were so friendly and helpful without being “in your face”. Nothing was too much trouble for them. After our arrival Johnny took my partner shopping in town then came home and prepared our fish, it was only then that we realised that he was meant to be off duty at 4:00, it was by then around 7:00. We felt terrible but Johnny would have none of it, insisting that he wanted to make our time there as special as possible. The following day we had a fantastic trip out to the sand island on the Dhow, once again Johnny was an absolute star answering questions and just being a complete joy to have around. Veronica had meantime reorganised the chaos that comes with 4 adults and 2 teens (I am hoping that this isn’t just my family) and when we got back calm once again prevailed at Villa Ponta. Veronica has a lovely quiet way about her, she seems to invisibly move around the house adding lovely touches, such as flowers, laying the table beautifully for each and every meal. These two individual are a complete asset to the property and keep it in pristine condition. Please could you send our regards and thanks to them for making our stay so perfect.

Four days are definitely too short to enjoy Villa Ponta!! We will certainly come back this Winter. I’ve already given the details to friends of mine. It was wonderful!

Activities

Restaurants:

  • Casbah on the beach has idyllic views, delicious food, friendly staff and good value for money. Sports fanatics can watch TV there.
  • Colonial style Casa Rex Restaurant is more upmarket and has beautiful gardens. Meals are served on the terrace with fantastic ocean views.
  • The old Dona Ana is a must visit for tea and cocktails. This historic hotel is located at the Vilanculo Harbour and is flanked by the ocean.
  • Café Tropical on the southern beach has a beautiful setting and is a good local experience.

Bars / Pubs:

Frutos do Mar is a great social outdoor pub on a deck overlooking the small harbour. Also try Aguia Negra Hotel and Beach Lodge Hotel, which of at the time of writing due to reopen its doors.

Fishing:

Should you be a keen fisherman, we suggest that you bring your rods and tackle with you. You may wish to contact Morgan who runs the boat yard, Big Blue, to find out if it may be possible to hire equipment.

Our Deep Sea Boat Tabasco:

Tabasco is equipped with two 135hp 4-stroke motors and is very fuel efficient. You may wish to user her. She takes eight people comfortably and is moored at the Big Blue boatyard, run by Morgan. Big Blue is situated at Aguia Negra, a holiday resort about half way back to town.
Morgan will be happy to bring Tabasco around to the little bay in front of the house to collect you rather than you travelling to Aguia Negra if you prefer. It is advisable to check out the weather forecast in advance as well as time as at low tide the sea in the in the bay goes out 500 metres or more which will give you a long walk. Please note that we will not be held responsible for any injury to yourselves. Johnny will carry all your gear to Tabasco plus a cold box, food, beers, wine etc. and the same when you return. If you could spare a cool drink and sanwich for him, he would love it. It is advisable to wear water shoes when wading in the water in the bay as there can be razor clams. For more details about hiring Tabasco please let us know.

Places to explore:

  • Benguerra Island is a 20 minute boat ride and you can drop in for a drink at two lodges as well as at Benguerra Island Lodge. (You need to phone the upfront)
Even better; I personally like going further along the stretch of beach to the north east end of the island, past Azura lodge, which should be pretty deserted and pristine.
  • If you travel another 15 minutes out through the gap between Benguerra and Bazarutto Islands you will reach ‘Two Mile Reef’ – great for snorkelling. Don’t plan on arriving at The Reef at high tide as the swells come over the reef and it can get a bit rough. Ask the skipper to head for the section called ‘The Aquarium’ which should be best for snorkelling / diving.
  • Before reaching The Reef you could also drop in at Bazaruto Island to climb the high sand dunes.
  • Just past Bazaruto is Pansy Island, a great beach littered with pansy shells. Ask the skipper who knows us and the boat well.
  • If you would like to go out fishing, Morgan will arrange it for you plus gear, but check with him first.
