Dog-friendly homes, digital detoxes and road tripping with friends I’ve known for longer than I haven’t are three of my absolute best.  So as my daughter, said friends and I set off to review a new dog-friendly hideaway on a nature reserve near Struisbaai I was in fine fettle.

We arrived to find the most gloriously simple home in a sublime setting.  Wings is situated in Andrewsfield Private Nature Reserve, around a 20 minute drive from Struisbaai.   The living space has floor to ceiling glass on three sides and looks out over fynbos to the sea beyond.  There is no other house in sight.   All the rooms have huge windows so the entire home is flooded with natural light.  The backdrops are white, the soft furnishings mute, neutral shades and the overall feel rather rustic yet comfy and totally charming.  There’s a table out front for enjoying sundowners with that view, and another in the courtyard for days when the sea breeze blows.

This home is the artist owner’s retreat…and, without wishing to sound too much of a tree-hugger, the home holds a palpable sense of her joy in abandoning all the doing our complex world demands and, for a while, simply being.

Our kids found simply being, with, horror of horrors, no WiFi, a little more challenging.  This lead to a morning playing board games together with much laughter along the way.  The sea looked tantalisingly close so later we set out for a quick pre-lunch walk to the beach.  Around 45 minutes later we finally reached it after some quite hectic bundu bashing through the fynbos.  The kids were ravenous, so rookie-error number two, we decided to wander along the beach for lunch in Struisbaai.  Almost two hours later we arrived, and, not for the first time, thanked Saint Patrick for a dog-friendly Irish pub still serving food!  The super-friendly manager of Wings called as we were finishing up and offered us a lift home, much to the kid’s relief.

Wings is off-grid with solar power and a back-up generator.  We chose to leave this off and enjoy the more fitting ambience of a roaring fire and candlelight.  After a couple of glasses of the good red we were ready for bed, which I was happy to discover were super comfortable with lovely linens and soft, downy duvets.

This is a place to reconnect with loved ones and catch up on life’s simple pleasures – walking, reading, cooking or indulging in a guilt-free afternoon nap.  We returned to the city feeling deeply rested and ready to face the world.

What we love!

  • The uninterrupted views
  • Once we finally GOT to the beach – having a huge stretch of it all to ourselves!
  • The utter tranquility of life in a Nature Reserve
  • Struisbaai is a short drive away and has a few seafood restaurants and some famous stingrays to watch from the jetty
  • The kids discovering that life without screens can be fun!

What you need to know…

  • You need a 4 x 4 to get to the house – the last 20 minutes into the reserve are on pretty rough, sand tracks
  • The house runs on solar power and smoothly clicks over to a generator when the solar runs out. The generator is too far away to be very audible
  • Whilst dogs are welcome please be aware that ticks and snakes are common, especially in summer
  • You can take a 10 minute drive within the reserve which gets you closer to the beach. However, it is still around a 20 minute walk through the dunes before you actually hit the beach

We visited Wings as a family on a very cold, windy and misty week-end. A roaring fire in a warm and comfortable house on a secluded spot in the vast strandveld was good for the soul. Even though it felt remote it was surprisingly close to the little town of Struisbaai where we could get anything we needed. --- The Gey von Pittuis family

Wings is a special place in an incredibly secluded spot. Our time there really felt like a lovely getaway.

We started our trip to Struisbaai from Gansbaai, having already spent a night in the town well-known for it’s shark-spotting trips. On arrival in Struisbaai we were greeted by an exceedingly friendly local fisherman, who immediately offered us freshly caught yellowtail. Struisbaai, by the way, is the yellowtail headquarters of South Africa. After browsing a local cafe and stocking up on all the necessary supplies for a night of seafood braai dining, we made our way to Wings and what promised to be an enchantingly isolated experience. On arrival at Wings you are struck by the solitude, and the magnificence of a home standing proudly in the middle of nowhere. Visitors are greeted with large, clear windows that look out into the reserve and into the sea beyond. The horizon calls from all corners of the patio too. If gazing longingly into the far distance helps put you at ease, then Wings is the house for you. The setting of Wings is truly magical; you are surrounded by nature with no other houses to spoil the view. The plaintive cry of a far-off gull, or the wind whipping through the fynbos, only adds to the serenity. The house is very comfortable, with large couches and elegant yet friendly decor making the visitor feel at home straight away. There are two braai areas, with one inside a very practical addition for those of us who like to braai come rain or shine. The outside braai sits in a prime location, and is expertly positioned away from any late afternoon sea breezes. The kitchen is well equipped; everything you need is present and accounted for, you simply need to add your cooking skills, fresh ingredients and a nice bottle of chilled white wine to complete the cozy picture. The rooms all have great views, with beds so comfortable that early-morning starts become something of an issue - we found it quite impossible to leave the loving embrace of the plush bedding! Wings is indeed a perfect hideaway house. It’s ideally suited for a family or a group of friends. With wide open spaces and a feeling of having left it all behind, Wings is the perfect place to relax, get close to nature, soak up the sun, and braai to your heart’s delight.
