Through the little town of Calitzdorp, past stretches of rambling vineyards and orchards, tucked away in a lush valley in the depths of the Klein Karoo, lies the original farmhouse of Daniel’s Kraal. The homestead was built in 1836 with its thatched roof, thick walls and expansive veranda, the house holds a tangible nostalgia, that transports its guests to a time of sweeter, simpler living.
The farmhouse rests on 2300 hectares of pristine wilderness; home to hundreds of species of succulents, plants, birds and wildlife. The ‘Little’ Karoo is one of the country’s most subtle, yet magnificent, desert jewels. The air seems crisper, the morning sun welcomes you and the only sounds to greet your ears are birdsong and the hurried whisper of wind through the trees.
The interior is the picture of classic farm style with it’s generously volumed living spaces, plush couches, original fireplaces and rich fabrics. Daniel’s Kraal boasts a special treasure trove of loved collectables; old books, found trinkets, foraged fossils and vintage china, have all found their proper place in this secret part of the world.
The modernised bathrooms and fully-equipped kitchen make for easy and chic country living. The surrounding vineyards, groves of olive trees and the Swartberg mountain range, provide the idyllic vista for G&Ts beneath the silver oak by the pool, and on winter evenings, locally produced port by the crackling fireplace. Come nightfall, look to the skies and be awed by a kaleidoscope of stars.
This is a home that is made to be lived in, a home to be enjoyed and shared. Whether you’re looking to return to a simpler state of being, hike, walk, birdwatch or explore, Daniel’s Kraal offers its guests something truly magical.
