Gracious family living on a private golf estate
Set among the vineyards, a superb golf course and the foothills of the Constantiaberg mountains, Sugarbird is just half an hour from vibrant Cape Town, yet it offers an idyllic country lifestyle, especially for families.
Serenely settled on the grounds of the esteemed Steenberg Estate in Tokai, in the heart of the Constantia Winelands, where heritage farmhouses and theatrical, contemporary dwellings open their doors as a luxury hotel and spa with refined restaurants and tasting rooms – Sugarbird is a tranquil place of residence, cushioned into the comforts of this sublime wine farm. Amongst the fine dining and world-class wine quaffing around the foothills of the Constantiaberg mountains in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs, there’s a visually spectacular and technically challenging 18-hole golf course for any avid player to get their clubs out for. The beautiful farm scenery and abounding nature that engulfs the homestead, sets the tone for a remarkably peaceful stay, in a wonderfully secure estate.
Sugarbird lends itself as the perfect place for you and your clan to retreat to, spending as much time as you wish on the magnificent grounds, with all of the neighbouring attractions being just a swift drive away. Its four spacious bedrooms – 3 of which are ensuite – dart themselves down the wings of the home, that flank the central living, dining, cooking and entertaining spaces. Cleverly considered reading nooks and lounging areas, a cosy TV room and secluded resting spots scatter themselves around the home, allowing for ample alone time, as well as the perfect gathering areas for the whole clan. A lovely little courtyard and the front verandah with sun loungers around the swimming pool provide the necessary hours of novel indulging in the sunshine. For those that don’t fancy a hike into the mountains or a bike ride along the scenic routes, a round of golf or a visit to the hotel’s spa, you have all that you need in your own Steenberg sanctuary, a home that’s beautifully layered in luxurious textures and tones, resembling a stylish farmhouse.
Golf, wine and beaches…
Alongside all of its attributes, this hideaway extends itself as a wonderful base to pivot from, as you explore the Cape’s coastline, the great peninsula, her mountain routes and seaside hamlets. Of course the cosmopolis of the town centre, too, that’s a mere 30-minute drive away. Being in the heart of the Constantia Wine Route and Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs, you’ll have more than enough feasting and tasting options to conquer the wine wish lists. But for some, it’s also lovely to sit still, marvelling at the mountains, listening to the resident guinea fowl and watching the pin-tailed wydahs sweep around the golfing greens. Going for long walks around the estate, up to the dam and onto the nature trails. It’s all yours for the taking, at your own leisurely pace.
What we love!
- Residing on a secure wine farm and golfing estate comes with so many perks. Needlessly listing the obvious, you’re at liberty to dine out at one of the sublime restaurants – Tryn or Bistro Sixteen82 – or cook at home. A gentle amble to and from the table.
- The layout of the home and its ample space for feeling both connected and independent simultaneously. The quality furnishings and luxury linens complete the ambience of the hideaway.
- Whatever the weather, Sugarbird caters to all of the seasons with its fireplaces aplenty and underfloor heating, air conditioning in the central hub of the home and enclosed glass doors to trap the temperatures, in or out.
What you need to know…
- The Steenberg Home Association has their set of rules and regulations pertaining to each property. Unfortunately small children are not catered to as the swimming pool is exposed without a fence.
- The property has a full solar back-up system, allowing for an uninterrupted power supply.
- Steenberg Village Shopping Centre is a minute’s-drive away with Constantia Village being a 5-minute drive. Conveniently close to all of the wine estates, fantastic restaurants, shopping facilities, cafés and bars. As well as horse-riding trails and sports venues, not to mention the golf course.
- Wine connoisseurs will find themselves in the heart of the Constantia Wine Route, the oldest in the Cape.
- Cape Town’s city centre is only a 30-minute drive from the property.
- Silvermine Nature Reserve and Muizenberg beach, St James and Kalk Bay are also a short drive away from the estate.
- If Sugarbird isn’t available on your dates, browse our other homes in Tokai or Zwaanswyk, such as Copper House and Meadow House or in the Southern Suburbs. Bishopscourt, Constantia, Newlands, Zwaanswyk are all nearby.
- We also have a collection of Southern Peninsula hideaways a little further south of Tokai or Zwaanswyk.
