Just like the owners of Schön! 1866 have done, so ardently, to their palatial Cape Town home.

Tucked away from the pulse of the City Bowl district, cocooned in a lavish oasis of tranquility and glamour, this hideaway nurtures the soul of an urbanite, that loves the beat of what the streets have to offer, and equally relishes in the comfort of a calm community. Positioned immediately behind the notorious Mount Nelson Hotel, with views looking up to Signal Hill, through the branches of an 80-year old Frangipani tree, Schön! 1866 welcomes you in to an avant-garde gallery of style, passion and inspiration. Set on one level of open plan living, entertaining and dining spaces, the 19th Century bones of the build have been gently restored by the notable, local GSQUARED Architects, retaining its heritage and grandeur. The three ensuite deluxe bedrooms are in keeping with the signature statement of the home – adorned in a fusion of mid-century classics, works from African artisans, Robin Sprong wallpapers of Italian landscapes and the famous Avalana print, bespoke pieces by local craftsmen, and a touch of 90’s frisky fashion photography. It’s rather like walking into the Parisian Chanel boutique on Avenue Montaigne – only a lot less intimidating. The indulgence of the refined, contemporary furnishings, Herringbone-laid European oak floors, Caesarstone countertops from Israel, and French glass doors gently envelope you into a languid state of luxury.

There’s more as you move outside into the one-bedroomed bungalow, where the urban chic continues from pillar to patio, barstool to bedside table. No corners have been cut when it comes to sumptuous style in all of its splendour. Even the resident hadedas, sunbirds and starlings enjoy a prance around the private garden that’s ablaze in colours from the bougainvilleas, strelitzias and beautiful, ripe lemon tree.

Every moment of the day at this grand and graceful hideaway calls for a salut to city dwelling and its seclusion from the bustle. A morning coffee on the verandah and an afternoon snooze under the Frangipani can very quickly follow with a delectable feast on Kloof Street and a gentle amble through the neighbourhood. Its proximity to all that beckons is as virtuous as its privacy. For when the time calls for a long supper, at the long table, with your finest friends, sharing the finest moments, you are completely ensconced in a Babylonian bubble.

What we love!

The way in which the Victorian essence of the home has been retained in the renovation, and keeping the original features on display – the doors, the windows and the chimney. The contemporary pieces do not detract from its original beauty.
The foliage indoors – in the dining room that opens up to the outside, and in the main ensuite.
When the time comes to recline to the main ensuite, the heavy white curtains create the dreamiest atmosphere when closed. The light pierces through the windows and the waves of the fabric, creating a cosy cocoon.
It has to be said that the kitchen, its countertop and cabinetry is state-of-the-art. It functions with creative discretion.
Location. Location. Location. Access to the charisma of the City Bowl and its plethora of restaurants, cafés, boutiques and stores is all part of an idyllic urban escape.

What you need to know…

Everything you need is within walking distance from the property. Supermarkets, pharmacies, doctors and dentists, bars and restaurants. While it is perfectly safe for you to wander the streets by day, it is safer to either drive or uber by night.
If you fancy an extra bit of exercise – when the hiking, surfing and cycling has been ticked off the list – Gardens Lawn Tennis Club is only a few streets away, and open to non-members.
Should you wish to sample some of the finest beef fillets and t-bone steaks in town, Nelson’s Eye Restaurant is across the road.
