Handpicked for you...

You will fall head over heels in love with this gorgeous cottage in the heart of Churchhaven, never mind with the turquoise lagoon itself. For a wonderful holiday in the middle of winter or the heat of summer, take your canoes, your kayaks, your bicycles, your books and just know that you and the family are in for a big, big treat.

A classic cottage reflecting the beautiful colours and hues of the lagoon and the fynbos in the reserve, it has oversized grey and white linen-covered sofas in the lounge; Nguni cowhides thrown on the floor; and clean white bedrooms with wrought-iron beds beautiful linens, little crocheted cushions and big baskets of comfort, blankets and soft mushy pillows everywhere. The bathrooms have contemporary, white Victorian baths and basins, and the kitchen is fully equipped with an espresso machine, gas cooker, beautiful cups, plates, Carrol Boyes cutlery and all the necessities for laid-back yet luxe living.

The balau deck is designed for long evenings with a big fireplace, pizza oven, comfy seating and an eight-seater Adrian Hope outside table for dinners, plus a firepit to keep you warm while you spot stars in the clear night skies into the wee hours. A fabulous long weekend or fortnight to be had – reflecting all the wonderful shades of turquoise-blue of the lagoon from the deck.

What we love…

  • the wonderfully warm lagoon waters with the softest white-sand beaches and very safe swimming for the kids
  • the utterly unspoilt, pristine surroundings deep in a National Parks Board Nature Reserve
  • the back-to-basics lifestyle in a charming hamlet on the water’s edge
  • the incredible range of things to do and see, from the spring flowers in Postberg Flower Reserve, idyllic beach picnics at nearby Kraalbaai (close to the famous Preekstoel rock formation) and kitesurfing at the famous Shark Bay just outside Langebaan (an excellent place for beginners and to hone your skills)

Need to know…

  • Only one hour’s drive from Cape Town
  • This is blissful off-the-grid living, so there is no WiFi, limited cellphone accessibility and solar power rules supreme. Most houses rely on rainwater catchment or borehole water driven by solar pumps, and gas hobs and gas ovens are used for cooking. In winter, fireplaces and ever-faithful wood-burning stoves keep things cosy
  • Only cellphones, computers, music players and the like can be used in the plugs. No hairdryers, hair straighteners, curling irons or any other appliances are to be plugged in as this could cause permanent damage to the electrical system
  • Church Cottage is inside the West Coast National Park and so you will need to please take note of the following gate times for entering and departing the park: 1 April to 31 August 07:00 to 17:30; 1 September to 31 March 07:00 to 18:30. No entrance into the park is possible after the gates close in the evenings
  • There is a per person, per day entrance fee due to enter the park.  Please check the SANPARKS website for latest fee tariffs – https://www.sanparks.org/parks/west_coast/tourism/tariffs.phpIt may be worth investing in a Wild Card – https://www.sanparks.org/wild_new/
