Handpicked for you...

Once a mysterious homestead, the historic Prynnsberg Manor at Prynnsberg Estate has been cobwebbed for the past 50 years or so. Built in the 1880’s in local sandstone with Kimberley diamond fortunes, it was known in architectural circles as the ‘jewel of the eastern Free State’ but was sadly neglected over time, and eventually auctioned 14 years ago. Saved from ruin in the nick of time, its new owners Rick and Sue Melvill had set out to buy a stone cottage but, in a moment of madness (or genius) landed up bidding on a vast leaking, crumbling country house. ‘There was nothing here,’ says Rick. ‘Not even a bath plug! We found bees in the bedrooms and sticky honey on the floors.’ Today they very fondly refer to it as their ‘Folly in the Veld’ as it’s taken years of passionate and painstaking restoration to bring this historic landmark back to life.

Prynnsberg Manor is now welcoming guests and is arguably the most elegant yet eccentric and flamboyant venue for weddings, polo events, milestone celebrations or even corporate launches. It’s a country house that loves a party and booked exclusively, it’s all yours… everything from the billiard room to the wine cellar, polo ponies and Landrover.

There’s nothing quite like it in South Africa. Where else can you sleep in such historic grandeur, get married in an original sandstone church, play an invigorating game of bicycle polo and then bathe in a bath house by candlelight, gin or whiskey in hand? Only Prynnsberg.

We love: the sheer decadence of the Manor House but its equally tempting to book the entire estate, including its classic safari-style tented camp. For more on the glamping experience, read here .

Need to know: There’s a minimum rate per night (up to 8 guests) but the house sleeps 16 in 8 bedrooms, with space for a further five guests on the upstairs covered verandah in summer (ideally for older children or teens). The Manor House is not self-catering. Instead, full board rates are charged for three homemade meals a day, all teas and coffees and full access to the wine cellar.

Prynnsberg is hosting The Art of Letter Writing at Prynnsberg Manor on the weekend of 29th and 30th September. Join Craig Higginson for a creative writers-in-residence weekend. Read more about the course here and here
