Handpicked for you...

Flamingo is our newest hideaway in Churchhaven – this one’s a winner! Look forward to splendid solitude, with not another house in sight and flamingos at the kitchen window, and just enjoy your time in the hideaway closest to the wetland. This is a great escape! Watch the tide ebb and flow, and swim, paddle or canoe in the warm lagoon, enjoy a good book on the deck or a lazy nap on the day bed. Rise with the sun and go to sleep after dark – make sure you fit in some time around the fire pit and don’t forget to look up at the spectacular night sky. Bring along your bicycles, walking shoes or stand-up paddleboards and explore the pristine, untouched nature in this West Coast reserve.

Time passes slowly here, and once you’ve arrived you won’t want to leave! There is one restaurant in the reserve – Geelbek – which is great for a long, lazy lunch, but you’ll find that you’ll want to remain ensconced in your little piece of the West Coast National Park, so stock up on groceries and deli treats before you leave home.

What we love!

  • The wonderfully warm lagoon waters with the softest white-sand beaches and very safe swimming for the kids
  • The utterly unspoilt, pristine surroundings deep in a National Parks Board Nature Reserve
  • The back-to-basics lifestyle in a wild, West Coast setting overlooking the lagoon
  • The incredible range of things to do and see, from the spring flowers in Postberg Flower Reserve, idyllic beach picnics at nearby Kraalbaai (close to the famous Preekstoel rock formation) and kite-surfing at the famous Shark Bay just outside Langebaan (an excellent place for beginners and to hone your skills)

What you need to know…

  • Only one hour’s drive from Cape Town
  • This is blissful off-the-grid living, so there is no WiFi, limited cellphone accessibility and solar power rules supreme. Most houses rely on rainwater catchment or borehole water driven by solar pumps, and gas hobs and gas ovens are used for cooking. In winter, fireplaces and ever-faithful wood-burning stoves keep things cosy
  • Only cellphones, computers, music players and the like can be used in the plugs. No hairdryers, hair straighteners, curling irons or any other appliances are to be plugged in as this could cause permanent damage to the electrical system
  • We are unable to offer a cleaning service at Churchhaven.  The ONLY cleaning service available at any of our Churchhaven properties is a mid-week linen change if you are staying for 6 nights or longer.  Due to being off-grid Churchhaven houses do not have dishwashers.  If this is a problem for you please consider our other West Coast options.
  • Please take note of the following gate times for entering and departing the West Coast National Park: 1 April to 31 August 07:00 to 17:30; 1 September to 31 March 07:00 to 18:30. No entrance into the park is possible after the gates close in the evenings
  • There is a per person, per day entrance fee due to enter the park.  Please check the SANPARKS website for latest fee tariffs – https://www.sanparks.org/parks/west_coast/tourism/tariffs.phpIt may be worth investing in a Wild Card – https://www.sanparks.org/wild_new/

We had a wonderful stay at Flamingo – it was our second time back for our wedding anniversary and we absolutely loved it once again! The location and layout of the house is simply superb and I can highly recommend it. There is really nothing at all I would change.

“I have so much to say about Flamingo Cottage in Churchhaven but I am afraid that the right words have not been discovered yet to describe this place. I will try to sum it up in a few words. WOW. Spectacular. Stunning. Beautiful. Amazing. Wonderful. A must see. A must do. Definitely one for anybody’s bucket list. We loved it and we will definitely be back. We had THE most amazing weekend at Flamingo recently and I would like to book it again. We shared a really special weekend with friends at Flamingo, and could not have wished for a more peaceful, beautiful, inspiring and serene spot to spend a few days catching up with old friends and life! From the eland slowly strolling past not bothered by our presence, to the franklin coming to inspect the terrace for any leftovers and cleaning the grill, to the flamingos and amazing ‘snow' birds on the lagoon, to being able to look onto nothing and see no-one unless we desired it…we all felt like we had died and gone to heaven! It felt like the sort of place that had seen many wonderful sun drenched family, friend and fun filled days. Thank you for sharing your little piece of paradise with us!

We had a wonderful stay at Flamingo. We liked the house very much. We would like to rent again during our next RSA visit. We found the house in good shape, the house is beautifully detailed and constructed/finished. All was wonderful

We had a wonderful time in Churchhaven, my review, as such, goes like this: Flamingos can sleep standing up, more so they can do so on one leg. If you need further convincing that they win this contest, hands down (sic!), the side it’s standing on is still awake, whilst the other half, is still asleep. Perhaps this would explain why the dulcet croak of the flamingos, carried by the wind, across the wetlands, can be heard day and night. I am convinced too that this is integral to the sleeping sickness suffered whilst here in Churchhaven or is that Church Heaven? Safe, unspoilt and chilled – short, simple words, yet apt (yes, another shorty) to describe the ethos of this retreat. There is a twinge of guilt in writing this, for this is a place you want to be selfish about and keep for yourself. If you are looking to escape the noise, pace and closed down spaces of city life, you have the right address. West Coast charm and character, exquisitely decorated and equipped with all the modern conveniences we take for granted. It is quite easy to succumb to the notion that you are roughing it – heck man, we off the grid here! That would be a lie, from the extra length, king size bed to the outside shower, opulent rusticity (if there is such a word) abounds. Add to this the visual splendor ……west coast scrub, variegated tundra like marshland, to a lagoon of ever-changing blue and turquoise hues; spalshed with flamingos, cormorants, gulls, plovers, ruffs, whimbrels, egrets, ibis and tern. The views are bewitching and intoxicating. It is well known that as you enter Churchhaven, you hand your spine in at the entry kiosk, The obvious consequence is that you are now a jellied invertebrate only capable of brief sorties from the day bed for nourishment, before returning to trip out on the tranquility and headiness of the languid colour changes and ebb and flow of the flamingos. As the 70’s Nikey advertising adage declared : JUST DO IT!
