The gracious Cape Dutch homestead stands stoically watching over the vast estate that is Kurland, just outside Plettenberg Bay. Kurland is 600 hectares of rolling greens and verdant forest, with a river running through it, resting in the Outeniqua foothills. Now, this renowned estate is welcoming exclusive-use guests to enjoy authentic country living at Kurland Homestead. Also on the estate is Kurland Villa, The Pavilion and Katarina’s, which are sort after for weddings and celebrations.
The original farm homestead dates back to at least 1885, and has been in the Behr family since the 1940s. Sensitive additions have been made over the years, but the enchanting sash windows and wide board yellowwood floors remain as gentle reminders that Kurland is steeped in history. Passed down through the generations, the estate is synonymous with polo, so horses and paddocks are part of this living, working farm.
Kurland Homestead with its striking wide verandah stands poolside, along with a crescent of suites on either side of it. Views from the grandstand verandah are of lapping water, greens and horses, forest and moody mountains – in that order. It’s so beautiful and refreshing, you can sit there all day and watch the world – and the horses – go by.
Inside, the Homestead is calm and comfortable. Here, layered English country décor meets Cape Dutch grace, with elegance and no pretence. There’s a dream kitchen for cooks and caterers, a spa and gym, and playrooms for children – who also have a dedicated outdoor swimming pool. In winter the roaring fire beckons you to move closer, curl up and bask; summers around the pool are as relaxed as you can get. If you have energetic genes you can appease them by going horse riding, mountain biking, cycling, canoeing, walking or hiking. And there will be something new to do every day you are there.
Homely, cosy, relaxed, beautiful and authentic – that’s Kurland. It’s a place of magnanimous space, bucolic vistas and serene country ease. Extended family gatherings, weddings, birthdays and reunions have all been celebrated here with great aplomb and happy memories. It’s idyllic nature lovers who also enjoy creature comforts, and a touch of gracious living – Cape Dutch country style.
