You could buy tickets to the Seychelles for a beach break. The water’s warm and many of the luxury villas there hug the hillside amidst a flurry of palm fronds and dense tropical blooms. But there’s a perfect match to that fantasy much closer to home if you’re South African or if you’re an international guest to the country, a fabulous and discreet alternative to the popular islands. This Sheffield Beach villa on the KwaZulu-Natal Dolphin coast is framed and fanned by banana palms and ferns and dramatic strelitzia. The decor instantly gives you this message: be calm. Your life is now simpler. With soft furnishing and throws in ocean blues and turquoise, there is no fuss or clutter.
It is a deep, slow, yoga-breathing kind of a place. There are courtyards and decks and verandas and a hammock. If you’re not up making a simple salad with fresh fish on the braai, you’re likely to be horizontal under fans that wump-wump quietly and stir the air above your bed. From the front bedrooms, you wake and through half-lidded eyes and sun-slatted shadows, the ocean is right there, a stroll away. Sling on a sarong, shorts and skip the sandals and go barefoot. The screeded floors will be cool underfoot and latest health news urges you to connect with the earth this way. Down below the lawn and loungers, a warm Indian Ocean sweeps in and rolls over low rocks and sand but it’s the soft air here all year round that really signals a summery break. Even in winter most days rise gently to 23 degrees C and in summer, an ocean breeze knocks back the effect of the high 20s or 30s. A break here clears your head, slows the hours and brings you the perspective you need on life.

Guest reviews are written by our customers after their stay at No 37.
No. 37 provides a super relaxing chilled out stay. The spaces are much bigger than what the pictures allude to. The multiple lounging options allow a family gathering to easily catch up but not step on toes. Ample space in the upstairs sleeping quarters. The setting is incredible. The arrival takes your breath away. Neighbours can barely be seen and with the natural bush surrounding the house and the endless view over the ocean it really felt like you were on a ship. We saw dolphins, whales and a shark. Some binoculars may be good for these sightings! The house was very well equipped with everything we needed. Brian mentioned the owners may be waiting to get internet sorted out – personally I don’t think you have to offer this. We took our own. Memory, the house cleaner, was really very warm and pleasant. She cleaned efficiently and quickly and left us with sufficient time alone. Brian also impressed us with a couple of mussels on the last morning – super delicious! There was quite a bit of booze and food/ condiments in the house. We used the salt and some vinegar but other than that did not use anything. Memory suggested we could use whatever we wanted. Just being fellow PH owners, some guests may take complete advantage of this and utilise all booze on hand. If the owners do wish for it to be replaced, maybe a little note in the manual would suffice. Maybe some useful things to do/ nice shopping in the area could be inserted into the manual. We found The Market at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre which had a great butchery, organic food store, olive spot etc. The homegrown grapefruits and oranges from the owners were a real treat! A very big thank you to the owners for allowing us to stay in their house at the reduced rate. It was a memorable stay!
We absolutely loved No 37 thanks! The stylish and easy living spaces encouraged us to relax and unwind. Having an uninterrupted view of the sea and the sound of the crashing waves gently lulled us into holiday mode. We even had whales and dolphins to entertain us! It was bliss to have the beach a few steps away for a walk or a swim in the waves amongst the rocks and pools full of sea life. This is a truly special place.
