Found close to the enticingly iconic Soussevlei in the deep south of the red desert NamibRand Reserve is a place so remote and secluded that flying in is the norm. This is Wolwedans’ Boulders Camp, and it’s as close as you’ll ever get to being on the moon. The stark beauty here will take your breath away. It’s otherworldly and awe-inspiring at the same time.
Carefully placed at the base of a tumble of granite boulders are five tented suites. Each is perfectly private with its own outside terrace for leisure time and siestas. But you have panoramic desert views from the living space inside too, including from the bed. In fact, if you roll back the canvas on three sides of the suite, inside and outside become seamless. It’s a unique experience to be surrounded by arid rocky plains, yet be completely cosseted too. Just 10 guests can savour this experience at any one time.
Boulders Camp is the most remote of all the Wolwedans properties, being a good three hours from any of the other camps in the collection. It’s as far off the beaten track as you can get and comes with a deeply immersive experience of the desert. Here you can experience a completely different world, that’s both fragile and unique, and dusted with meaningful solitude.
Imagine walking along the ancient hunting grounds of Bushmen and experiencing their world for just a few hours, or hopping aboard a game-viewing vehicle for a slow, scenic drive and watching the dazzle of day turn to night – you can do this by fat bike too. Or watch the day disappear from atop the mountainous rocky plateau nearby, sundowner in hand – it’s absolute magic. Then, when the stars come out and you relax alongside the leaping evening fire back at camp, you’ll be mesmerised by the simplicity of the moment – until a sumptuous dinner vies for your attention. This is without doubt the good life, Africa style.
