Tankwa River Lodge, is ideal for those that want to get away and have some real down time! The 300-year-old homestead is off-grid but the house has solar lights, romantic candles and paraffin lanterns (which for me is already half way to slowing down). But as soon as you head out to Sutherland, at the turn off at Matjiesfontein, the ancient Karoo landscape works its magic. The road weaves through harsh but beautiful hills, opening up as you cross the boundary into the Northern Cape and head left on 33kms of dirt road, ending at Blaauwheuwel Farm. Open the gate and follow the white stones downhill, past the quiver tree and curious horses, until you reach the historic werf, at the heart of this 2 500 hectare Karoo farm.
A surprisingly lush garden of succulents, pistachio-coloured fever trees and succulents greets you, and if you arrive at dusk, the firepit will be blazing with a welcoming fire in the outdoor firepit, always the gathering point until late into the night, when the brightest stars blaze above in the blackest skies. And when everyone’s ready to turn in, the old farmhouse has plenty of open fireplaces and thick throws to keep toes toasty till morning. But summer evenings are a balmy affair and doors and windows are flung open wide to welcome in the freshest farm air imaginable. Nights are sometimes punctuated with farm sounds of honking geese, pigs settling down and horses clip clopping by.
Tankwa River Lodge is an eclectic mix of many beautiful collectables. The owners have been gathering treasures over time with old cupboards and shelves stacked with vintage kitchenware, kelims and antique rugs covering the stone floor and Nguni hides over the simple screed. Life has stood still here for certain, but not the lifestyle! You’ll find all modern comforts and want for nothing, as it’s a much-loved hideaway.
We had the hottest weather and it was almost the middle of winter- be ready for anything! Winters are especially freezing cold as this is one of the coldest areas in the country while summers are baking hot. Pack a kikoi and your Havianas.
There is a small welcoming plunge pool which the children spent many an hour lying in to cool off . There is plenty of shade and heaps of comfy laid back couches for reading and board games.
We had to do the 4×4 routes on the farm and enjoyed sundowners watching the sun set over the Karoo landscape. The Tankwa National park is a short drive from here.
Expect to see plenty of game on the farm, it is well stocked with Springbok, Gemsbok,Hartebeest and Kudu. This is also home to the Aardvark. A very rare sight indeed. An extra bonus are the 6 beautiful horses that live and roam on the farm. Two are rescue horses and the rest were born here. At 5pm they arrive for their food much to the delight of the children and adults alike.
Good news is that dogs are very welcome.

Just wanted to let you know we had a magical weekend and could not have asked for a better setting to celebrate our wedding union. Anita and the team were super helpful and we really appreciate everyone's efforts!
Thank you again for all your care and service.
Our stay was superb, we totally fell in love with the place and all its residents. We didn't want to leave and can’t wait to go back.
Despite my concerns, we felt safe and very well looked after the whole time while not being "overcrowded" with attention. Anita's delicious cakes made all of us feel welcome. They were a perfect contribution to our meals on the back veranda dappled in gentle sunlight with birds and bougainvillea for company.
Tankwa River Lodge - what a gem! Thank you so much for a magical stay at Tankwa River Lodge. Set in the majestic landscape of Tankwa Karoo, the lodge is an authentic mix of lived in special home alive with memories and a perfect break destination, comfortable and full of beautiful detail. We stayed in September and the semi desert was alive with flowers. A perfect combination of relaxing, "switch off the world" kind of place, and opportunities to make your own memories on game drives, gentle hikes and wonderful encounters with resident horses and wildlife.
Beautiful, comfortable and utterly authentic, Tankwa River Lodge is the perfect getaway from the noise, hustle and bustle of life. The lodge is located deep into the Karoo - one of the most extraordinarily tranquil landscapes South Africa has to offer. We were there in winter and the large fires and boma were perfect for cosy evenings with nothing but the stars and wonderful friends for company. Cecil Sr and Cecil Jr ensure you have everything - from logs, to wonderful game drives, to arranging lovely Judy to come and wash up. If you want and need to relax and reset your soul, this is the ideal spot to do it in.”
Thank you for arranging our most enjoyable stay at Tankwa River Lodge. We were not disappointed in any way other than being restricted to two nights. We know that the magnetic pull to return will linger for a long time. Appreciated your efficiency and good humour .
We had a lovely time. Really just love Tankwa River Lodge!
We could not ask for a better getaway for Easter. We loved every minute - the beauty, tranquility, silence and lovely farmhouse. Everyone from grownups through teens and kids to dogs had a fabulous time. Cecil and his kind family were very friendly and helpful.
Thanks for another superb stay at Tankwa – we actually enjoyed this winter stay even more than our summer one! The river was flowing, the gardens lush and our bush dinner experience was nothing short of magical!
We had the best time, thanks for all your help! Our stay at Tankwa River Lodge was a absolutely brilliant. The accommodation and farm exceeded our expectations - it is a truly special place. The house is decorated and laid out with real flair, whilst at the same time paying homage to the uniqueness of the location. Every utensil and facility we need was perfectly provided for. Cecil, the farm manager, was an absolute pleasure to meet and deal with and he and his team went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay, as did Peter the owner. The Tankwa Karoo is an incredibly special part of the country, I really cannot recommend Tanka River Lodge enough as a base from which to experience it.

We had a great time at Tankwa River Lodge. The house is beautifully furnished and very comfortable: it was also was wonderfully peaceful so we could all unwind after the pressures of the week. It was also very good to have the help of someone who cleaned the kitchen for us after the meals. I would love to go back next year after it has rained and the river is running.
We had a great stay (weather fantastic), Cecil and his team did a fab job with supper and the breakfast out was a real treat. The house is beautiful, comfortable and has all the necessary comforts. Thanks very much.

It was a wonderful experience!
Lovely house, enjoyed it!
What a lovely holiday thank you!! Huge compliments to your farm manager Morne and a very sweet chap that helped him who took the children riding twice a day . The girls loved it and it was really the highlight of their trip. I did thank them personally but they were terrifically helpful. Lovely house, beautiful setting and loved the pool. I will definitely recommend it onwards...
An utterly lovely place with an extremely helpful and kind manager. The Perfect Hideway team did everything possible to make the trip easy. The best place and the best team!
Your staff were great, the horses were lovely. My youngest daughter spent hours running down the river in her costume after them. We saw lovely springbok, gemsbok, had sundowners at the river, skimming rocks on the water; and on the hill while the girls played in the shale. We had a 3 hour walk on the Sunday along the river bed. Lazed for hours on the front verandah, lunched on the back verandah. The house is very special and so cool. So once again thank you.
I, well we, enjoyed lots and lots and lots! Stunning venue both the location and the place itself. Loved the décor and facilities. Relished in the stars and fire pit, pool and ponies. "
