Romansbaai Beach and Fynbos Estate is a private residential estate set on Danger Point peninsula, on the Overberg coast of South Africa's Western Cape. Sandwiched between Kleinbaai and Gansbaai, it is 25 minutes' drive beyond the village of Stanford. Its pristine white beach faces north across Walker Bay towards Hermanus, with the Overberg mountains rising on the horizon.

Romansbaai is about two hours' drive from Cape Town, an easy escape for a long weekend or a slow week by the sea. Hermanus is about 45 minutes away. Our tip: break the journey with lunch at Madrè, the renowned restaurant in historic Stanford (advance booking essential), a quaint country village that's home to many artists.

Yes. Romansbaai is renowned for whale watching in season, from June to November, when southern right whales gather in Walker Bay to calve. Peak season is between September and October. Boat-based whale-watching trips leave from Kleinbaai harbour, about five minutes from the estate, for a closer encounter.

The Marine Big Five are whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and African penguins. The waters around Gansbaai and Dyer Island are one of the few places to see all five, and marine safaris depart from Kleinbaai harbour (weather permitting), about five minutes from Romansbaai. There is also a colony of African penguins at Stony Point Nature Reserve in Betty's Bay, which you can visit on your way back to Cape Town if you choose the route via Clarence Drive.

Zebra, springbok, bontebok and eland graze freely through the Cape fynbos, often within sight of the hideaways. The estate also shelters a protected milkwood forest and a healthy population of African black oystercatchers, a rare coastal bird often seen along the shoreline.

Days unfold slowly here with tidal pools, shell-hunting, snorkelling and paddleboarding to enjoy, or walking and cycling trails through fynbos and milkwoods. To the right of the estate gates, drive 5km along the Birkenhead Peninsula to Danger Point Lighthouse – a favourite activity for families – or follow the 4×4 coastal trail from the lighthouse to Kleinbaai harbour, where marine safaris and whale-watching boats depart. Further afield, horse ride on the beach with Pearly Beach Horse Trails or taste wine at Lomond, the closest wine farm to the estate – the start of the Elim Wine Route.

Yes, you can climb right to the top of the historic lighthouse – built in 1895 – for wide views over the coast towards Dyer Island. It is also the starting point of the short but beautiful 4×4 coastal trail that runs along the shore to Kleinbaai harbour.

Lomond, on the Elim Wine Route, is the closest wine farm to Romansbaai and also has a mountain-biking trail through its fynbos. The Stanford area has a small wine route of its own, and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus is a scenic day trip

Grootbos is a private nature reserve, so it isn't open to walk-in visitors, but visiting its contemporary Grootbos Florilegium is one of the highlights of a stay at Romansbaai. Nearby, Klipgat Cave – one of the most important archaeological sites on the Cape coast – lies below Grootbos at the start of Walker Bay beach.

Romansbaai's beach is protected, so horse rides don't take place on the estate itself. Pearly Beach Horse Trails, Romansbaai's preferred partner, leads rides along the open beaches and dunes at Pearly Beach, 20 minutes' drive up the coast.

Romansbaai suits families well. The sheltered north-facing beach, tidal pools, grazing wildlife and secure estate make it easy for children to roam, and the climb up the Danger Point Lighthouse near Kleinbaai is a family favourite. Adults unwind with whale sightings, local wine and long, quiet evenings.
