FAQ’S
How does our Bespoke Travel team work?
Can I take kids on safari?
Absolutely. We design safaris that are both thrilling and family friendly. From shorter drives suited to younger adventurers to kid-approved lodges with safe environments and fun activities, we’ll ensure every generation is captivated – without compromising comfort or safety.
Most lodges allow supervised children from 6 years and up on game drive, but we have a collection of exclusive-use lodges where all ages are welcome. If you have very young children, or are pregnant, we can still offer malaria-free Big Five options.
Do you also book flights and ground transport?
This is my first safari – what should I expect?
Expect the extraordinary. Imagine rising at dawn for misty wilderness scenes, enjoying private game drives led by expert guides, or unwinding at a luxurious camp under star-lit skies. We’ll prep you on what to pack, how to stay comfortable, wildlife etiquette, and how to truly soak up the magic – from sunrise safaris to starlit dinners.
Beware, if you think you are coming on a once-in-a-lifetime safari, you are not. Most travellers fall in love with doing safaris – almost an addiction, but a healthy one! This is no problem as we have many different areas to safari, offering different wildlife experiences, sightings, terrains, landscapes and experiences, from cat-rich reserves to incredible birdwatching and from seasonal migrations to gorilla trekking.
We can book safaris in Southern Africa: South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda).
I’m travelling with friends who have been everywhere. Do you have any truly special, wow experiences we can book?
Yes, we can craft any journey you wish by boat, helicopter, private charter or even hot-air balloon. You name it, we have done it or will make it happen. It’s what we love doing! Send us your dreams and wishes and we’ll get started. We do private chefs in remote locations, especially for surprise milestone celebrations. Want to sleep in a treehouse or sky bed in a Big Five reserve? Host a dinner in a palazzo? Do cookery courses or go foraging? Take over an entire village in Italy for a special weekend with friends? Yoga retreat or art classes in Provence? Yes, we can do it for you.
How much does a safari cost?
There is a huge range of pricing from ZAR10 000 to ZAR50 000 per person per day and everything in between. It is based on various things: location, quality of the guides, size of the lodge, luxury of the lodge, cuisine, reputation etc. A safari is the most expensive part of any African itinerary as it is fully inclusive of all meals and often drinks, game drives, bush walks and the privilege of being in the authentic wild.
It is highly recommended to allocate a generous budget to this part of your trip. Access to the lodges also needs to be considered as generally they are remotely located, so light aircraft charter hops are often the only way of reaching them.
When is the best time to go on safari?
It depends which country you are visiting but generally one can go on safari any time of the year.
Best time to safari in South Africa
The best time for a safari up north in the Greater Kruger region in South Africa is during the dry winter months, from May to September, when the vegetation is less dense and animals congregate around waterholes, making them easier to spot. The shoulder months of April and May and September to October also offer pleasant weather and good game viewing. While a safari is possible year-round, the wet summer months up north (October to April) can present challenges with increased vegetation, rain, and higher humidity. . An alternative is to choose a family friendly, malaria-free Eastern Cape safari or discover the wild Kalahari. If you’re combining Cape Town and the Winelands with a safari, September to May are the best months to visit.
Best time to safari in Botswana
Our favourite time for a Botswana safari is generally the dry season from May to September (prime time), when wildlife is concentrated around water sources and vegetation is sparse, improving visibility for game viewing. For birdwatching, visit during the rainy season, or green season. Photographers enjoy the build-up of spectacular cloud formations before the daily showers, migratory birds are numerous and the zebra and wildebeest migration begins in the Makgadikgadi Pans. Okavango Delta safaris are best when water levels are higher and this brings excellent wildlife sightings, especially by mokoro or traditional dug-out. October and November are very hot months.
Best time to safari in Namibia
This is more of a dramatic ‘landscape safari’ and it’s best experienced in the cooler, dry winter months, from May to October. Temperatures are still hot but not searingly so. Excellent for wildlife viewing as animals gather around waterholes. For birdwatching and to see lush, green landscapes, the wet summer season (November to April) is ideal, though expect high temperatures, humidity and potential travel disruptions from rain. Private charters between camps are the ultimate way to go… you’ll be mesmerised by the extraordinary landscapes below.
Best time to see the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Zambia
No matter whether you stay on the Zambian side or Zimbabwean side, the best time to visit Victoria Falls to see the most impressive waterfall views and enjoy adrenaline-pumping activities like Devil’s Pool, is during the high-water season (February to June), but particularly April and May when the Zambezi River is at its peak. However, expect lots of spray and mist, potentially obscuring views and making photography challenging. If you prefer better visibility of the Falls and ideal conditions for activities like white-water rafting, the low water season (August to January) is better, though the falls will be less dramatic. The dry season (June to August) is also great for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around water sources. Secret tip: rainbows tend to be better in the afternoon, but being first in the morning – on the walk through the rain forest – is equally wonderful. You can cross the border by getting a day pass from customs to walk over the historic bridge… chat to us to find out more.
Best time to safari in East Africa
The best time for a safari in Kenya or Tanzania is generally during the dry season, from June to October and again from January to March, when animals congregate at water sources, making them easier to spot in sparse vegetation. This period also coincides with the great migration in the Serengeti and Masai Mara, with peak viewing from July to October. For a less crowded and more affordable experience, consider the shoulder season like October and November, or the green season (traditionally when the rains come) from April to June, with its photogenic cloud build-ups in the afternoons, lush landscapes, baby animals and the arrival of migratory birds. Or combine a safari experience with two of the most romantic East African destinations: Zanzibar in Tanzania or Lamu in Kenya.
