Hedonistic Holidays on the Coast!
Nestled in the lush landscape of Durban North, Sophia’s Retreat lends itself as a perfect family getaway for all to gather, amidst a whimsical wonderland of luxury and curiosity.
There’s something undeniably special about Sophia’s Retreat. Something that can only really be understood when you’re standing in the vast, open spaces of the home, overlooking the verdant gardens and endless horizon of blue. As the warm, tropical Durban North air affectionately smothers your stance. The doors and windows are open to the elements, the birds are singing their welcome songs and the fireplaces are flickering with light – only because, why not? A fireplace brings the family together, the fun to its full tempo and the mood to its rightful frame, irrespective of the weather, according to the owner. That irrefutable feeling of familiarity and holiday festivity engulfs. This hideaway has a plethora of stories to tell, urging you to start creating some of your own, from the moment you arrive.
Its rugged and robust materials that have been ardently exposed with intent, are softened by the memorabilia, the worldly artefacts, the literature, the chandeliers and candelabras. The unique furnishings, the antique collectables, the portraits and pieces of nature’s treasures. Six beautiful bedrooms tier themselves over the levels of living, dining, reclining and entertaining spaces. All having their own element of relaxation and rebellion – reminding us not too take ourselves too seriously. Especially when on holiday in the tropics.
The outdoor spaces – where the long wrap-around deck sits with its rim-flow swimming pool, lazy loungers, a jacuzzi, pizza oven, bar and braai area – draw you out into the award-winning garden. An enchanting wonderland that reveals little secret pockets of paradise. A pond full of exotic fish. Koi, pacu, vegetarian piranha and snakehead fish. Chickens and bunny rabbits and little buck roam around the garden like its their own. Which it is, of course. The owner’s philosophy on the makings of a family home are deeply rooted into the soil. Harnessing the essence of life’s most magical playground.
Let the sun’s golden light stream through the lush greenery of the neighbouring nature reserve
The Umhlanga beaches are only a 10-minute drive away from the property, so you’ll be off for a morning stroll along the promenade, a coffee and hot buttery bake from one of the beach cafés. Followed by a dip in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Lunch at The Oyster Box Hotel or a simple snack and a cocktail. Perhaps stocking up on some of the essentials before heading home to the swimming pool, the deck and her loungers, the garden and the games. Nothing like a healthy afternoon of competition with the clan. Making those lifelong memories that are as inspiring as the ones you’ve become privy to, by spending time in this lovely oasis. Savouring every simple moment, letting the laidback times roll. Day after day.
What we love!
- Sleeping in the master suite, allowing the air to engulf your space as you listen to the night or the early morning birds – nothing separating you from the elements. An incredibly romantic experience that heightens the hedonism of the holiday!
- All of the little bits and bobs around the home that share a unique story of travel, familial love, adventure, risk and rebellion. It’s homes like these that remind us all about the importance of letting our hair down. Yet all the while feeling the essence of luxury.
- The morning sunrises over the sea, waking up to golden hues landing across the surfaces. Enjoying the moment with a coffee, making your way out into the garden, either on the deck or down the steps to the pond. Listening to the birds as they begin their day.
What you need to know…
- The property is very generous with its living and entertaining spaces. With plenty of games available. A gym, enough televisions that are hidden in chests and behind frames so as not to dominate the space. There’s also a study for those that need to tend to some quiet hours of work.
- Umhlanga beach is only 10-minutes away by car. There is a 5km stretch of promenade to walk, with a coffee stall called Daily Dose. The Oyster Box Hotel is also just up the road. All local convenience stores, including a nearby Woolworths supermarket is a 5-minute drive away.
- If you feel like popping out for a hearty Italian feasting, the local Al Firenze family restaurant in La Lucia is a great spot for some laidback meals with the whole clan.
