Where soul meets the sea
The Point rests on the dunes in its serene beach bungalow stance, on the shores of Kommetjie, along Cape Town’s Southern Peninsula, where ocean views and barefoot luxury unfold.
Choosing The Point in Kommetjie is not so much booking a beach house as it is making a quiet pact with happiness itself. You arrive with a hat, a bottle of sunscreen and perhaps the noble intention to do very little, and find yourself keeping that promise beautifully.
From the deck, the Atlantic stretches endlessly, a restless mirror of blue that shimmers beneath the Southern Peninsula sun. The air is pungent with salty wafts that carry themselves on the wings of the waves. Immediately rising and falling in front of you. The dunes breaking that barrier between you and the beach.
The house itself seems to breathe in rhythm with the sea. Terracotta tiles add the earthy tones, their warmth offset by cool white walls and generous splashes of polished wood. Every corner displays its conscious simplicity.
An easy, unstudied kind of beauty that needs no embellishment. The great wood-burning fireplace commands the living room. Perfect for the odd misty evening when the ocean sulks behind low clouds, and you feel like opening a decent vintage.
A spacious flow links the sitting room, dining areas, and terrace, each space coaxing you towards the views. Those infinite, dancing waves that seem to exist solely for your amusement. It’s impossible not to drift into the rhythm of it all. Mornings begin with the sun pouring through wide windows, turning the crisp white linens into seas of light. Evenings end with the hush of tide and breeze against the thatched roof.
The five bedrooms, tucked beneath exposed beams that have heard a thousand seaside stories, are your own little nests to retreat to. All soft textures, sea-spray hues, and the faint, comforting scent of saltwood. Leave the shutters ajar, and you’ll wake to the blush of dawn across the dunes. The promise of another perfect day for you and the clan to do whatever tickles your fancy.
Where time forgets its purpose
Watch the surfers flicker across the waves like dragonflies, as the dogs chase the tide, chewing off chunks of deposited kelp. You can walk for as many strides as you choose, wandering down to the local cafés for coffee, hot bakes and homemade jams.
Or head to the nearby brewery for a pint and a pizza. Venture into the mountains to earn some points around the supper table. It’ll be spread like it was at brunch; ladened with delicious, colourful platters of wholesome holiday treats.
As the day signals an end, the fire’s still slightly crackling and the candle wax has given its salute good night. You might like to stand barefoot on the terrace, looking up at the stars and listening to the waves, as you linger one last minute longer. You still have tomorrow, and the day after that, and all of the days to come, to savour the new-found sense of living, that The Point has instilled.
What we love!
- The property is located immediately on the beach, neighbouring some lovely laidback residents and within easy access to the area’s convenience stores and cafés, nature trails and mountain routes.
- Swimming in the pool, when you don’t feel like dipping into the ocean.
- The property is also wonderful as a winter escape. Its lovely fireplace on the ground floor heats up the home perfectly. It’s enchanting to watch the storms clear and then the blue skies return. A whole different kind of drama.
- The interiors are neutral and subtle. Layered in lots of luxury and comfort.
- Early morning coffees or late afternoon sundowners, with a book and maybe some binoculars, watching the ocean wildlife from the top deck.
What you need to know…
- Cape Town’s city centre is no more than a 45-minute drive away, along one of the most scenic routes in the world.
- For a pizza or some deli shopping, head to Imhoff Farm, that’s no more than a 5-minute drive away from the bungalow. A lovely spot for the whole family to venture to.
- Noordhoek Village is only a 15-minute drive from the property should you wish to head out of Kommetjie for the morning or afternoon. Where Chef Franck Dangereux’s Foodbarn Restaurant is, together with The Roost Coffee Shop, Kristen’s decadent ice-cream, a pub and a playground, a delicatessen, souvenir shops and a yoga studio too. For a pint or two of a delicious craft beer, Aegir Brewery is no more than a 15-minute drive away, where the fabulous Italian eatery, Limoncello also sits, beneath the milkwood trees.
- All major supermarkets and large convenience stores are located at the Long Beach Shopping Mall – a 10-minute drive from the property.
