Honouring its place like a revered family member at the table, Buffavento occupies space on the West Coast’s Langebaan Lagoon, with an earnest beach bungalow demeanour, impeccably dressed and rather suave with its stance.
There’s something about the Langebaan Lagoon along the West Coast that defies an easy description. An eternal stretch of turquoise meets the raw and rugged beauty of the emerald fynbos. Bursting into vibrant blankets of colour when the Namaqualand daisies come into bloom in spring. Flamingos saunter the shoreline throughout the seasons, as the other hundreds of bird species accompany you on your surf, around your boat and through the sails. Langebaan has a unique way of restoring balance, especially when arriving at Buffavento. It gently tunes the soul, settles the dust, and reminds us to surrender to the timeless rhythm of the natural world.
Perhaps that’s what inspired the name of this beach bungalow; an Italian word meaning “defier of the winds”, or named after a famous castle in northern Cypress. Both depictions are perfect for Buffavento, for the wind churns up the wilderness within, and the waters evoke a memory of gallivanting the Greek islands. Life is the same on this Sandy Bay stretch, where time is measured by the tides. Where generations have inherited custodianship, taking the baton from those before them and, in time, passing it on again. There’s something sacred about the rhythm of a community gathering by belonging. Where neighbours are family, and tradition is written in the vanilla sands.
What began as a modest timber cottage, Buffavento has transformed into the contemporary home it is today, under the mindful eye of the owners, carefully preserving the footprint and character of the original build. Four beautiful ensuite bedrooms, an additional guest cloakroom, and an outdoor shower – perfect after a swim in the lagoon – generously scatter themselves around the home. At its heart lies an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, that flows onto a front deck with vast views of the lagoon. A sheltered courtyard rests at the rear, framed by an olive and lemon tree, perfectly protected from the coastal elements.
Fostering the flames of holiday hearts
Family pieces and deeply comfy, refined furnishings sit alongside one another within the home. Every piece has been placed with purpose. Every detail tells a story, reflecting generations of family life beside the lagoon. Being just 100 metres from the beach, morning walks and daily swims become second nature.
Everything Langebaan is loved for lies within easy reach. Shark Bay Beach an easy amble along one of the village’s sandy roads. The old yacht club and the gentle waters of Sandy Bay are a hop, skip and a jump away. The wild beauty of the West Coast National Park begins just beyond the backyard. You can cycle, walk, cartwheel around the landscape at your own pace. Exploring the shoreline, setting off along coastal footpaths, chirping and chatting with the remarkable birdlife. Bordering a protected nature reserve, there’s a laidback loveliness to how you approach a seaside holiday.
Something that’s especially appealing to families. Children can freely roam with confidence, neighbours greet one another with those familiar waves and shiny-eye smiles, and the air has a way of filling your lungs, your hearts and your thoughts with the kind of fire that bursts with enthusiasm. With love for the space you’re occupying, and those that you’re occupying the space with. Love for the lagoon, and the life that unfolds around it. Just as the name Buffavento suggests.
