Shiro House lets the West Coast landscape captivate your gaze, embraced by the neutrality of its refined beach villa interiors, where your Yzerfontein adventures gently unfold beside the sea.
There’s something deliciously disarming about arriving in Yzerfontein. It’s not like the other seaside towns that you’ve passed along the way. The roads loosening their grip on you as the West Coast undulates with a canvas of fynbos, pale dunes, endless blue and expansive skies. Stopping off at padstals to purchase the chilli-honey coated cashews, and greasy brown bags filled with biltong. The occasional sunhat thrown into the whicker basket as a souvenir. Every hamlet has its quirks, but this one in particular surprises you, the very second you arrive.
It’s got the perfect blend of old and new, intriguing and trustworthy, vast and anchored. Shiro House harnesses this into its contemporary stance, sitting above the shoreline, overlooking the fynbos veld. Where the sea becomes the ever-present backdrop to all the days that lie ahead. In fact it’s difficult to imagine a more persuasive argument for not staying a week longer than intended.
From the moment you walk through the door, the house draws you out with its own exhale, accompanying yours. Light moves generously through the open-plan spaces, catching on natural textures, earthy tones and beautifully considered details. Custom oak furniture gives the interiors warmth, with the neutral palette letting the views do what they do best. The boundless body of The Atlantic changes constantly from a glistening silver in the morning, a brilliant blue by midday, into a wonderfully moody early evening sheath of gold.
This magnificent beach hideaway has four bedrooms – two of which are ensuite with the other two sharing. Perfect for a family holiday or a gathering of friends. There is enough room to disappear with a book when the time warrants, vetsak fireside and mug of joy. There are plenty of lovely congregating spaces too. Long meals around the dining table, the family cook tossing another salad, something sizzling on the braai, as another bottle of something cold gets poured. You’re listening to the gulls and the waves, letting them shape the conversations.
They say, water heals
When we venture outside, it becomes immediately apparent that this is where the house really earns its West Coast credentials. The expansive deck wraps around the swimming pool and dining areas, creating an easygoing space for long lunches, sunbathing sessions, and evenings spent watching the light leave the water.
The beach is barely three minutes away on foot. The route takes you through fynbos and sandy pathways where the landscape feels wonderfully untamed. Depending on your luck, you might on occasion, encounter an ostrich or a tortoise going about its business, just as you and the clan are. Off for a walkie talkie with your favourite tribe. A swim, a paddle (depending on the waves), collecting shells and other little curious finds. It’s remarkable how quickly this village can make a daily plan feel totally unnecessary.
And that is perhaps the charm of Shiro House. It’s beautifully designed without feeling precious, sophisticated without losing its sense of ease. You can spend the morning exploring Yzerfontein, indulging in a wholesome seafood feast, returning for a swim. Light the fire and find yourself still summoning the energy for another round of cards at the table. For families, friends and anyone partial to a little seaside gallivanting, Shiro House is a place that changes the pace of a holiday, and leaves you wondering why you ever thought it was a good idea to come just for the weekend.
