Western Cape - frequently asked questions

Where can we rent a luxury holiday home in the Western Cape?
Perfect Hideaways offers more than 380 hideaways across the Western Cape, from beach houses and farmhouses to mountain retreats and family homes for large groups. Choose Cape Town for beaches and city life, or the Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. You'll also find hideaways on the West Coast, in the Overberg, along the Garden Route, in the Cederberg and in the Western Karoo, plus a safari lodge on Melozhori Private Game Reserve. Each region has its own page, so browse by area.
Which region of the Western Cape should we choose?
Each region of the Western Cape suits a different kind of holiday. Cape Town pairs Table Mountain with beaches and restaurants. The Cape Winelands, around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, are for wine estates and long lunches. The West Coast offers lagoons and spring wildflowers, and the Overberg brings whale watching around Hermanus. The Garden Route has forests, lakes and beaches. The Cederberg suits hikers, with sandstone formations and ancient San and Khoi rock art, and the Western Karoo offers wide skies along Route 62.
How do you get to and around the Western Cape?
Most travellers fly into Cape Town International Airport, about 20km from the city centre, and explore the Western Cape by car. The N2 runs east over Sir Lowry's Pass towards Hermanus, about 120km from Cape Town, and on along the Garden Route, where Wilderness is about 450km from the city. George Airport, the main gateway to the Garden Route, has car hire. North of Cape Town, the R27 follows the West Coast, and the N7 leads to the Cederberg, about 250km away or roughly three hours' drive.
When is the best time to visit the Western Cape?
The Western Cape is a year-round destination, but its climate changes from region to region. Cape Town and the south-west have a Mediterranean climate, with most rain in winter, from June to August. Summer, from December to February, is dry, warm and sunny. Along the Garden Route, rain can fall in any month, which keeps its forests green. Inland, in the Great Karoo, summer temperatures can reach 40°C and winter nights can fall below freezing. December and January are the busiest months on the coast, so book well ahead.
Which areas of the Western Cape are best for a family holiday in December?
December is summer in the Western Cape, and the coast comes into its own. In Cape Town, False Bay's water is warmer than the Atlantic side's, which makes Muizenberg a family favourite, and Boulders Beach offers sheltered swimming beside the penguin colony. In Hermanus, Grotto Beach flies a Blue Flag in summer. On the West Coast, the sheltered Langebaan Lagoon is usually warmer and calmer than the open Atlantic. The Garden Route adds forest walks and kayaking on its lakes and rivers. December is peak season, so book early. Supervise children at the water's edge.
Is there a malaria-free safari for families in the Western Cape?
Yes. South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases says malaria transmission is mainly confined to low-altitude parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, far from the Western Cape. Melozhori Game Reserve, a 2 300ha reserve in the Overberg near Stormsvlei, is about two hours' drive from Cape Town. Game drives cross Karoo, renosterveld and fynbos landscapes, home to giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, eland and bontebok. Ask our team about age guidelines for game drives before you book.
When and where can you see whales in the Western Cape?
Southern right whales visit the Western Cape coast from about June to November, when they come close to shore to mate and calve. Walker Bay, around Hermanus in the Overberg, is the best-known stretch, with land-based viewing from the town's 12km Cliff Path. Further east, about 120 southern right whales return each year to the marine reserve at De Hoop Nature Reserve. Around False Bay, look out from Boyes Drive, between St James and Kalk Bay, or Clarence Drive, between Gordon's Bay and Rooi-Els. September to November are the most reliable months. Licensed boat trips run from Hermanus, weather permitting, so book ahead. Our Plan My Stay concierge team can arrange one for you.
When do the wildflowers bloom in the Western Cape?
Spring wildflowers bloom on the Western Cape's West Coast in August and September, after the winter rains. The Postberg section of the West Coast National Park, whose West Coast Gate is about 120km north of Cape Town, opens to visitors only during flower season, usually from 1 August to 30 September. The flowers open fully on sunny days, between late morning and mid-afternoon, so plan your drive for the warmest part of the day. Displays vary from year to year with the winter rainfall, and park fees are higher during flower season.
What is fynbos and the Cape Floral Region?
Fynbos is a fine-leaved shrubland, adapted to a Mediterranean climate and periodic fires, found only in the Cape Floral Region, mostly in the Western Cape. The region covers less than 0.5% of Africa's land area but holds nearly 20% of its flora, and about 69% of its estimated 9 000 plant species grow nowhere else. The Cape Floral Region Protected Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, include the Cederberg. In Cape Town, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a good place to see fynbos up close.
Where can you go wine tasting in the Western Cape?
In the Western Cape, wine tasting starts within Cape Town itself, in the Constantia Valley, about 25 minutes from the city centre, where Groot Constantia was granted in 1685. Stellenbosch, about 50km from Cape Town, is home to South Africa's first wine route, formed in 1971. In Franschhoek, the hop-on, hop-off Franschhoek Wine Tram links estates across the valley. Near Hermanus, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is known for cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Book tastings and lunches ahead in summer. Our Plan My Stay concierge team can plan a day in the Cape Winelands.
Can you combine several Western Cape regions in one trip?
Yes. A self-drive loop links several regions of the Western Cape. Head east from Cape Town on the N2 through the Overberg, stopping near Stormsvlei for a safari at Melozhori Private Game Reserve, then continue to the Garden Route: Wilderness is about 450km from Cape Town and Knysna about 500km. Return inland on Route 62 through the Klein Karoo, via Oudtshoorn, Calitzdorp and Barrydale to Montagu, about two hours from Cape Town. Our Plan My Stay concierge team can help you plan the route.
