From the inside looking out, it feels as if you’ve somehow snuck your way into someone’s private residence in the wilderness of KwaZulu-Natal.
Gladstones does not attempt to tame the bush, it simply holds its place within it. An authentic bush home, layered with all the stylish touches one aspires to when on safari. The landscape speaks for itself, but the interiors of this four-bedroomed house are what make it entirely enchanting.
Settled within the 10,300ha Zuka Private Game Reserve, part of the 33,000ha Munywana Conservancy, Gladstones gently cushions itself into the rich African soil – allowing the wilderness to take centre stage.
Inside, the views engulf the generous living, open-plan kitchen and entertaining spaces of the home. Large doors and windows open out into the indigenous gardens that pave the way to the surrounding wilderness where zebra, nyala and impala are often seen grazing. The bush never feels far away, allowing you an ever-constant exchange with nature.
Four beautiful suites rest on either side of the living areas, accommodating as many as eight of you. Dining is woven naturally into each day, with every meal thoughtfully prepared by the Gladstones team. From the chef, butler and housekeeper, to the guide and tracker, every detail is quietly taken care of – allowing you to relax completely.
Some days you’ll enjoy a breakfast under the trees, other days around the boma. Beside the swimming pool or in the dining room. As it will be with lunch and dinner. Secretly switching the venues around so that there’s always something different to look forward to.
Every stay unfolds at your own pace. Early mornings begin with coffee as the bush awakens, followed by game drives with your private guide and tracker. Return for breakfast, spend the afternoon by the pool, indulge in a massage, enjoy a game of tennis, or simply settle into a quiet corner with a book before heading out again before the sun begins to set.
Every day a different story
Some days you’ll choose to rise a little slower. Or you might head to the warm waters of the Elephant Coast for a beach excursion, a two-hour drive from Gladstones. You’ll swim and snorkel near Sodwana Bay after a drive through forested dunes and past a community market. A delicious picnic will be set up in a shaded spot overlooking the beach, where you can unwind, listen to the waves, snorkel or simply enjoy the soft sand beneath your feet. By late afternoon, you’ll be back in the tranquillity of the bush.
For a deeper connection to the reserve, a rhino conservation experience may be arranged, offering a rare glimpse into the vital work taking place within the conservancy. Immersive experiences like these reflect Gladstones’ enduring commitment to protecting this remarkable wilderness and its wildlife.
Everything about your stay is tailored to your liking, your daily preferences, in rhythm with your safari clocks. At Gladstones, luxury is found in space, simplicity and the privilege of feeling completely at home in the wild.
